Sebastian: ¡Hola! Te damos la bienvenida a otro episodio de Un día en español, a Babbel podcast for Spanish learners. I’m your host, Sebastian.

Do you believe in ghosts? Has something inexplicable ever happened to you? I myself am not a particularly superstitious person, but I think Sofía might have a different point of view on that topic. Let’s head to Cancún, where she’ll tell us about a pajama party that she’ll never forget.

Sofía: ¡Hola! Soy Sofía y soy de la Ciudad de México, pero vivo con mi familia en Cancún. Probablemente ya lo saben, Cancún es una ciudad en la costa del Mar Caribe, famosa por sus playas y lugares arqueológicos.

Sebastian: Ooh, Cancún! You probably already know, probablemente ya lo saben, but it’s a city on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. Each year, tourists flock to its beautiful beaches and archeological sites. Sofía only lived in Cancún desde hace un año, for one year, and she already has three good friends there: Florencia, Delfina y Andrea.

Sofía: Vivo en Cancún desde hace un año y ya tengo tres muy buenas amigas: Florencia, Delfina y Andrea. Tengo suerte de tener amigas tan geniales.

Sebastian: Today they’re doing una pijamada, a pajama party. They’re on their summer vacation, so they don’t need to madrugar, get up early the next morning, and they can stay up the whole night chatting.

Sofía: Hoy hacemos una pijamada en la casa de Florencia. Es verano y estamos de vacaciones. No tenemos que madrugar y podemos estar despiertas hablando toda la noche. Ahora estoy preparando mi mochila con las cosas que quiero llevar a la pijamada.

Sebastian: Sofía says that she’s preparing her backpack, estoy preparando mi mochila. Maybe you’ve heard some Spanish verbs that end in -ando or -iendo before. Well, this ending emphasizes that you’re doing something at this very moment, and you’ll see some more examples of this throughout the story. Speaking of the story, let’s get back to it! So, Sofía’s mom takes her to Florencia’s house. She’s a bit late and the other girls ya están cenando, están comiendo unas pizzas, they’re already having dinner, they’re eating some pizzas.

Sofía: Mi mamá me lleva a casa de mi amiga Florencia. Llego un poco tarde. Mis amigas ya están cenando, están comiendo unas pizzas. Después de cenar ponemos la música bien alta.

Sebastian: After they have dinner, they play loud music and dance and sing until they’re tired, as Sofía says hasta que nos cansamos. So what are they going to do now? Florencia has an idea…

Sofía: ¿Y ahora? ¿Qué hacemos?… Entonces Florencia tiene una idea: contar historias de miedo.

Sebastian: Did you understand what Florencia’s idea was? Contar historias de miedo, to tell scary stories. Sofia loves this idea! Her dad is a doctor, and when his colleagues come over for dinner they always talk about hospitales embrujados, haunted hospitals, fantasmas, ghosts, and other spooky things… So Sofía has quite the repertoire of stories to make her friends’ hair stand on end!

Sofía: Esta idea me encanta. Mi papá es doctor y en las cenas con sus colegas siempre hablan de hospitales embrujados y fantasmas, y otras historias de miedo. Así que… puedo contar muchas historias.

Sebastian: They go to the salón, the living room. Sofía says we turn off the lights apagamos las luces and light some candles prendemos unas velas. They sit in silence. El ambiente, the atmosphere is perfect for their scary stories. Sofía starts telling one about a terrifying hospital. Andrea and Florencia are looking at Sofia intently, but Delfina is looking at her phone está mirando su celular. She doesn’t seem to be very impressed by the scary story…

Sofía: Vamos al salón. Apagamos las luces y prendemos unas velas. Estamos en silencio y el ambiente es perfecto para nuestras historias. Yo cuento una historia de un hospital terrorífico mientras Florencia y Andrea me están mirando con atención y Delfina está mirando su celular…

Sebastian: Now it’s Delfina’s turno to tell a story, but she doesn’t know any… and then she says something that makes the rest of the girls feel uneasy…

Sofía: –Delfina, es tu turno. ¿Quieres contar una historia?

Delfina: –Pues, no conozco ninguna. Y yo no creo en historias de fantasmas… Solo voy a creer si pasa algo…

Sofía: –¡Shhh! ¿Qué estás diciendo? Seguro que da mala suerte decir algo así.

Delfina: –Bueno, es mi opinión.

Sebastian: Yo no creo en historias de fantasmas, I don’t believe in ghost stories. Y solo voy a creer si pasa algo, I’ll only believe if something happens. Oof! That’s not exactly what you want to hear when you’re in the middle of telling scary stories, right? Sofía tells Delfina that saying something like that da mala suerte, brings bad luck.

Sofía: Todas estamos un poco asustadas por el comentario de Delfina, pues no queremos ver nada paranormal esta noche.

Sebastian: Delfina’s comment made all of the girls feel un poco asustadas, a little scared. No one wants to see something paranormal happening tonight. That being said, they’re not scared enough to stop telling spooky stories, and they keep going until el ambiente es un poco tenso, the atmosphere is a little tense. Delfina and Florencia don’t want to hear any more stories and go to the bedroom. But Andrea and Sofía stay… and they just can’t stop telling scary stories.

Sofía: Después de varias historias el ambiente es un poco tenso. Florencia y Delfina no quieren escuchar más historias y van a la habitación. Pero Andrea y yo nos quedamos y seguimos contando historias… no podemos parar.

Sebastian: Andrea starts telling another scary story. This one’s about a casa embrujada, a haunted house, where las cosas se prenden y se apagan, things turn on and off by themselves, like the TV and the radio. Andrea finishes her story, and both of them sit in silence for a moment…

Sofía: Entonces Andrea empieza a contar otra historia. Es sobre una casa embrujada donde las cosas se prenden y se apagan solas, como la televisión y el radio. Cuando Andrea termina de contar su historia nos quedamos un momento en silencio. Y entonces…

Escuchamos un ruido. Nos damos la vuelta y… ¡el radio está sonando! ¡Pero nadie lo prendió! ¡Y las dos empezamos a gritar llenas de terror!

Sebastian: Ok, I’m officially creeped out. They hear a noise, turn around, and see that the radio está sonando, it’s playing, even though no one turned it on! They both start screaming in terror! Delfina and Florencia come back to the living room to see what all the noise is about.

Sofía: Delfina y Florencia vuelven al salón.

Sebastian: The other girls are enojadas, angry about the noise. It’s late and Florencia’s mom is sleeping, está durmiendo.

Sofía: Están enojadas, pues la mamá de Florencia está durmiendo.

Sebastian: Florencia apaga el radio turns off the radio quickly so her mom doesn’t wake up. But then… they see Sofia and Andrea’s caras de terror, their terrified faces. They tell the other girls that the radio turned on by itself!

Sofía: Así que Florencia apaga el radio rápidamente para no despertar a su mamá. Pero cuando ven nuestras caras de terror les decimos que el radio se prendió solo… ¡todas gritamos!

Sebastian: They all scream! To be fair, I would too! They run into Florencia’s room and hide. They’re all really scared. Even Delfina is temblando, trembling.

Sofía: Corremos a la habitación de Florencia y nos escondemos. Todas tenemos mucho miedo. ¡Delfina está temblando!

Sebastian: After a while, después de un rato, they wake up Florencia’s mom to tell her qué ha pasado, what’s happened. She feels bad for the girls since they all look so nervous, and goes with them to the living room.

Sofía: Después de un rato despertamos a la mamá de Florencia para explicarle qué pasó. Ella baja con nosotras al salón porque estamos muy nerviosas.

Bajamos las escaleras lentamente y entramos en el salón. Todo está en silencio…

Sebastian: When they get to the living room, everything is silent. It seems like whatever turned the radio on is gone now. But how did it happen?! Sofía and Andrea just can’t explain it. They were alone in the living room and the radio doesn’t have a control remoto. Still shaken by their ghostly encounter, they go back upstairs to Florencia’s room. Sofia doesn’t think she’s going to tell any more scary stories tonight, that’s for sure!

Sofía: No podemos explicar cómo pasó. Andrea y yo estábamos solas en el salón y el radio no tiene un control remoto. Subimos otra vez las escaleras en silencio y vamos a la habitación de Florencia a dormir… Creo que ya no voy a contar más historias de miedo esta noche.

Sebastian: Wow, that was one spooky story! So… what do you think? Was it just a coincidence? I honestly don’t know what to think. Like I said, I don’t really believe in these things… but I’m gonna unplug a few things when I get home, just in case!
