¡Empezamos! Today we’re headed to Costa Rica – a small Central American country full of fascinating natural beauty, incredible wildlife, and a lot of volcanoes. It’s there that we’re going to join Gissell on a hike that ends up being a bit more dangerous than she and her friend anticipated! Let’s listen to her story!

Gissell: ¡Hola! ¿Cómo están? Me llamo Gissell y soy de Costa Rica, un pequeño país centroamericano lleno de fascinante naturaleza, animales increíbles y muchos volcanes.

Sebastian: Costa Rica is also the perfect place for those interested in senderismo, hiking, as it has a ton of national parks and nature reserves throughout the country.

Gissell: También, es el lugar perfecto para las personas interesadas en el senderismo, porque hay muchos parques nacionales y reservas naturales por todo el país.

Sebastian: And Gissell is actually a hiker herself. She started to do senderismo in 2017 with her Spanish friend Dani. Since they started, they’ve discovered lugares fascinantes, and they’ve also had a few adventures.

Gissell: Dani es mi amigo de España. Él y yo empezamos a hacer senderismo en 2017 en los parques de Costa Rica. Además de descubrir lugares fascinantes, también vivimos algunas aventuras.

Hoy vamos al Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo. Este parque es una de las áreas protegidas más grandes de Costa Rica. Y también es famoso por tener un volcán activo llamado Barva.

Sebastian: Did you get all of that? Today, they’re going to Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo. Gissell says that it’s una de las áreas protegidas más grandes de Costa Rica, one of the biggest protected areas of Costa Rica. And it’s also famous because of… yeah… it’s home to the active volcano Barva.

Ok, so, there’s something very important that debes tener en cuenta, you should take into account, if you’re going hiking in Costa Rica. And no, it’s not whether the volcano you’re hiking on is active or not… it’s the weather, el tiempo. There’s only two estaciones, seasons, in Costa Rica: la estación seca, the dry season, and la estación lluviosa, the rainy season. Each one lasts about six months.

Gissell: Si quieres hacer senderismo en Costa Rica, hay algo muy importante que debes tener en cuenta: el tiempo. Acá no existen las cuatro estaciones como en muchos otros países. Nosotros solo tenemos dos: la estación seca… y la estación lluviosa.

Ambas duran aproximadamente seis meses.

Sebastian: Gissell and Dani are visiting the park in the middle of la estación lluviosa. Now, luckily for them, it usually doesn’t rain the whole day. During the rainy season, hace sol por la mañana, literally it makes sun in the morning, it’s sunny in the morning.

You’ll see the verb hacer pop up a lot when talking about the weather. For example, you can describe the temperature with hace calor, it’s warm, or hace frío, it’s cold. But anyway, since it’s usually only sunny in the morning during the rainy season, it’s important to get started early, before the downpour in the afternoon.

Gissell: Nuestra visita al parque nacional es en plena estación lluviosa. Durante este periodo suele hacer sol por las mañanas, pero, normalmente, después de las tres de la tarde llueve. Y, a veces, puede llover mucho. Por eso, si planeas hacer senderismo, es recomendable empezar temprano en la mañana. Sin embargo, Dani y yo empezamos nuestra ruta al medio día…

Llegamos al parque y empezamos a caminar. El cielo está despejado y hace muy buen tiempo.

Sebastian: Hmm. Even though Gissell knows they should start early, she says empezamos nuestra ruta al medio día, we start our hike at midday. I’m not so sure that’s a great idea, but she assures us that el cielo está despejado, the sky is clear, y hace muy buen tiempo, the weather is really good.

Gissell: Estamos muy contentos de tener tan buena suerte con el tiempo. Las vistas son impresionantes y, gracias a la lluvia de ayer, las hojas tienen colores muy intensos. ¡Están hermosas!

Sebastian: Gissell says estamos muy contentos, we’re very happy, because they have luck, suerte, with the weather. And thanks to the lluvia, the rain that fell yesterday, the colors of the leaves are even more intense than usual!

The National Park Braulio Carrillo is 500 meters above sea level, which is about 1500 feet, so they can enjoy the view of the paisaje montañoso, the mountainous landscape. They keep hiking until they reach la laguna del Barva, Barva lagoon, in the volcano’s crater.

Gissell: Seguimos caminando mientras disfrutamos de un paisaje montañoso. El parque está a 500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Después, continuamos nuestra ruta hasta llegar a la laguna del Barva. Es un lugar muy especial; la laguna está en el cráter del volcán.
Pero entonces… empieza a llover…

Sebastian: But then… empieza a llover, it starts to rain. Uh oh, what are they going to do now? Está lloviendo, it’s raining and they’re really far from their car…

Dani: –¡Oh, no! ¡Está lloviendo!

Giselle: –¿Qué hacemos? Estamos muy lejos del carro…

Dani: –¡Tenemos que buscar refugio!

Sebastian: They have to look for shelter! They run until they reach the lagoon’s overlook while it rains harder and harder. But, la lluvia isn’t their only problem…

Gissell: Corremos hasta el mirador de la laguna mientras llueve más y más. Llegamos al mirador y justo en ese momento… empieza una tormenta eléctrica.

Sebastian: As soon as they get to the mirador, the overlook, una tormenta eléctrica, a thunderstorm starts! This is getting really dangerous now… But, how can they get help? Gissell says, tenemos que pedir ayuda, but when they check their phones, they don’t have any signal, no tienen señal. They can only sit and wait for the thunderstorm to blow over.

Gissell: –Creo que tenemos que pedir ayuda. ¿Tú celular tiene señal?

Dani: –No, no tiene…

Gissell: –El mío tampoco tiene señal… Tenemos que esperar.

Sebastian: They’re trapped while they wait for the storm to die down. La lluvia no para the rain isn’t stopping, and neither are the rayos y los truenos, lightning and thunder. I’d be worried… even scared, like Gissell and Dani. Estamos preocupados… Y también estamos un poco asustados.

Can you imagine being in that situation? Wouldn’t you be thinking: “What if something happens to us?”, “What if lightning strikes here?”, ¿Y si nos pasa algo? ¿Y si cae un rayo aquí? They have to get their minds off the situation and think about something else.

Gissell: La lluvia no para y los rayos y truenos tampoco. Los dos estamos preocupados… Y también estamos un poco asustados. ¿Y si nos pasa algo? ¿Y si cae un rayo aquí? Tenemos que pensar en otra cosa…

Sebastian: So what can they do? They have to wait… But to mantener la calma, keep calm, they start to reminisce about funny moments. They talk about their childhood, movies, adventures, food…

Gissell: Entonces, para poder mantener la calma, empezamos a recordar momentos graciosos. Hablamos de nuestra infancia, de películas, aventuras, comida… Hablamos mientras llueve sin parar, pero ya no estamos asustados. El tiempo vuela y cuando nos damos cuenta… ¡la tormenta ha parado!

Sebastian: And it works! They’re able to mantener la calma, and they’re not so asustados anymore. They’re so caught up in their stories that el tiempo vuela, time flies, and suddenly they realize that la tormenta ha parado, the storm has stopped! Finally! They immediately go running to their carro and drive to the city of Barva.

Gissell: Inmediatamente vamos corriendo al carro de mi amigo… y después vamos a la ciudad de Barva.

Después de hacer senderismo y estar horas esperando en la tormenta nos morimos de hambre. Así que, cuando por fin llegamos al centro de Barva, terminamos nuestra aventura comiendo una deliciosa pizza.

Sebastian: When they finally get to the city, they end their adventure by eating a delicious pizza. After so many hours of hiking and waiting out the storm, Gissell says that nos morimos de hambre, literally, “we are dying of hunger”, or as we’d say in English – “we’re starving!”

Gissell: Sin duda alguna, el senderismo es una actividad que vamos a seguir disfrutando. Pero ahora sabemos la importancia de siempre tomar precauciones, e investigar los lugares que queremos visitar para viajar de forma más segura.

Sebastian: Despite their run-in with the power of mother nature, Gissell and Dani have no plans to give up their hobby. Sin duda alguna, without a doubt, hiking is an activity that they are going to continue to enjoy. With that being said, they now know the importance of tomar precauciones, taking precautions and researching the places they want to visit so that they can travel de forma más segura, in a safer way.
