Today we'll hear from Daniela, who is quite the go-getter, and came from the Dominican Republic to New York to pursue her dream of working in la industria del cine, the film industry.

Daniela: Hola, soy Daniela. Soy de la República Dominicana, pero desde 2016 vivo en Nueva York, porque quiero trabajar en la industria del cine.

Sebastian: At the moment Daniela está desempleada, unemployed. It's not so easy to find trabajo, a job in film and television. But she's hopeful that she'll find something soon.

Daniela: En este momento estoy desempleada. Es difícil encontrar trabajo en el cine y la televisión. Pero estoy segura de que voy a encontrar trabajo pronto.

Sebastian: And she's working hard to find something, she says that every day me despierto, “I wake up”, at 5 am, a las cinco de la mañana. Way earlier than me, that's for sure! Then she looks for anuncios de puestos de trabajo, job postings.

Daniela: Todos los días me despierto a las cinco de la mañana para buscar anuncios de puestos de trabajo.

Sebastian: But why so early? Apparently, sometimes on film or TV series sets, someone is urgently needed para ese día, for that day. You need to reply very rápido, as there are a lot of people interested in the same job. Sometimes, a veces, she is lucky and she says that me llaman, “they call me”, to work with them.

Daniela: ¿Por qué tan temprano? Porque muchas veces, en el set de una serie o una película necesitan urgentemente a alguien para el mismo día.

Sebastian: But, hoy, today she has a different plan! She's going to do some cold calling. The production office for the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black is in a film studio in Brooklyn. She wants to go en persona, in person, to give them her resume, su currículum.

Daniela: Pero hoy tengo un plan diferente. La oficina de producción de Orange is the New Black está en un estudio de cine en Brooklyn. Quiero ir en persona para entregar mi currículum.

Sebastian: So she gets up temprano en la mañana, early in the morning. But, uff, I hope not at 5 again! She has some coffee and in treinta minutos, 30 minutes, she's already on the subway, el metro, heading to the studio.

Daniela: Me levanto temprano en la mañana. Tomo un café y 30 minutos más tarde estoy en el metro en dirección al estudio.

Sebastian: When she arrives at the studio it's not as smooth as she imagined. The security guard doesn't let her go in! What is she going to do now?

Daniela: Pero cuando llego al estudio, el guardia de seguridad me dice que no puedo entrar. Yo le explico la situación: necesito dar este currículum a los productores de Orange is The New Black.

Es muy importante para mí, puede ser una gran oportunidad para mi carrera…

Sebastian: Daniela insists and explains the situation to him, she really needs to give her resume to the creators of Orange is the New Black. This is very important to her, it can be una gran oportunidad, a great opportunity for her carrera, career. But after she insists, the security guard tells her that he's going to grab a coffee and that he is not going to mirar, look, if entro o no, “If I go inside or not”… And por supuesto, Daniela goes inside the studio!

Daniela: Después de insistir, el guardia me dice que va a ir a tomar un café y que no va a mirar si entro o no. Y yo, por supuesto, entro en el estudio.

Sebastian: Once she's in, una misión más difícil awaits her, which is to find, encontrar, the Orange is the New Black office. There are many different ones and it takes her a while to find it.

Daniela: Ahora tengo una misión más difícil: encontrar la oficina de Orange is the New Black. Hay muchas diferentes… pero por fin la encuentro. Ahora lo más difícil: entregar mi currículum.

Sebastian: Now comes lo más difícil, the most difficult part, to talk with them and give them her resume. She says that llamo a la puerta, “I knock on the door", and wait a few seconds.

Daniela: Llamo a la puerta y espero unos segundos.

Asistente de dirección: –¿Hola?

Daniela: –¡Buenos días! Soy Daniela, ¿puedo hablar con la asistente de dirección?

Asistente de dirección: –Sí, soy yo…

Sebastian: So Daniela asks for the direction assistant and she's lucky enough to be speaking with her. She tells her that she's very interested in working on this production, she has algo de experiencia, some experience. But the direction assistant seems to be very busy and just asks her for her resume and lets her know that if they have something for her they'll call her “si tenemos algo para usted, la vamos a llamar”.

Daniela: –Oh, perfecto. Bueno, yo estoy muy interesada en trabajar en esta producción. Tengo algo de experiencia y…

Asistente de dirección: –¿Tiene su currículum aquí?

Daniela: –Sí, claro.

Asistente de dirección: –Hmm. Si tenemos algo para usted, la vamos a llamar.

Daniela: –¡Muchísimas gracias!

Sebastian: Alright, well, that was one stressful situation. Daniela says that no tengo una sensación muy positiva, she doesn't have a very positive feeling about it. But hey, you know, it was a quick chat. So you never know!

Daniela: ¡Qué situación más estresante! No tengo una sensación muy positiva.

Sebastian: She goes back home, feeling cansada y un poco preocupada, tired and a bit worried. She wonders, ¿y si no me llaman? “What if they don't call me?”

Daniela: Camino ahora a la parada del metro. Estoy muy cansada y un poco preocupada, ¿y si no me llaman?

Sebastian: But then her phone rings…

Daniela: Entonces suena mi celular.

Daniela: –¿Aló?

Asistente de dirección: –Hola, ¿Daniela?

Daniela: –Sí, soy yo.

Asistente de dirección: –Soy la asistente de dirección de Orange is the New Black, hablamos hace unos minutos. Tenemos algo para usted. ¿Tiene tiempo la próxima semana?

Daniela: –¡Claro que sí!

Sebastian: That's amazing! Shortly after dropping off her resume she got a phone call asking her if she will have time, tiempo, next week, la próxima semana! Daniela doesn't think twice about it and accepts the offer! ¡Qué chévere! How cool! That's great news!

Daniela: ¡Qué chévere! ¡No puedo esperar a la próxima semana y empezar mi nuevo trabajo! ¡Me siento muy feliz!

Sebastian: Daniela says that no puedo esperar a la próxima semana, “I can‘t wait for next week”, she really wants to empezar, start her new trabajo. Me siento muy feliz, I feel very happy for Daniela!

Daniela: Años más tarde sigo trabajando en el mundo del cine como supervisora de continuidad y me encanta mi trabajo.

Sebastian: Years later, she's still working in the film industry, now as a supervisora de continuidad, script supervisor. And she really likes her job! Daniela is proof that following your dreams and taking risks can sometimes pay off in amazing ways!
