On July 22, 1849, the poet and essay writer Emma Lazarus was born in New York City. She became renowned for her poem “The New Colossus”, which is written inside the base of the Statue of Liberty. She was also an activist for Jewish causes, supporting Jewish immigrants arriving in the U.S.

On the same day in 1977, Chinese painter and sculptor Pan Yuliang died at the age of 82. She was one of the first women to graduate from the Shanghai Art School, and was known for her colorful paintings of the nude female body. She often painted self-portraits and pictures of women in everyday life.

On July 22, 2010, Argentina made same-sex marriage legal. This made it the first country in Latin America to do so. At the same time, same-sex couples were also given the right to adopt children.

Which words caught your attention today? ‘Renowned’ is another word for ‘famous’. And how about ‘nude’? It’s another word for naked, or without clothing. A ‘self-portrait’ is an image that the artist makes of themselves. In this case, Pan Yuliang painted pictures of herself.
