Hi, Sen here. Welcome to another episode of Today in History.
00:35
::
You’re going to hear three historical events from this day in the past. And you’ll hear them twice through. On this first listen, just try and get used to the way the English is spoken and how it sounds.
00:54
::
Are you ready? Then let’s begin. Here’s what happened today in history.
01:07
::
On July 18, 1830, the first Constitution of Uruguay was passed, five years after the country’s independence. To remember the occasion, this day is now a public holiday in Uruguay.
01:31
::
On the same day in 1992, a photo was taken of the Les Horribles Cernettes (or The Horrible CERN Girls). It became the first photo of a musical band posted on the World Wide Web. The parody pop group was made up of four women working for CERN, the European Organization of Nuclear Research.
02:06
::
On July 18, 2012, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was given the title of marshal, the country’s highest military rank. This move completed his control over the country’s state and military, securing his total power.

Let’s take a look at some of the more difficult words. A ‘constitution’ is a country’s set of basic laws and the rules of how it should be led. What’s more, a ‘rank’ is a particular position within an organization, such as the army. And how about the word ‘parody’? This is quite a hard one, but it’s when a piece of music or art is recreated in a funny way. Why not rewind and have another listen to these words.

That’s it for today. But, I'll be back tomorrow with another episode of Today in History.
