On July 12, 2002, farmers protesting a proposed airport in Texcoco, Mexico, captured six police officers and city judicial officials, eventually holding several people captive in exchange for the release of arrested protesters. The government had initially seized over 10,000 acres of land for the building of a new airport. The farmers rejected the compensation they were offered, countering that this was too meager of a price for their land and livelihoods, and began protesting in marches and highway blockades. They were later joined by anarchist, leftist and anti-globalist protest groups. The demonstrations culminated in August 2002 when the Mexican government agreed to the demands to abandon the construction of the airport.
