July 6, 1907 marks the birth of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. She began to paint after being severely injured in a bus accident at the age of 18. Her work consists of many portraits and self-portraits, centered on the themes of identity, the human body, and death.

On the same day in 1957, tennis player Althea Gibson claimed the singles title at Wimbledon, becoming the first Black woman to do so. After further dominating the international circuit and picking up eleven Grand Slams throughout her career, she went on to become a professional golfer. Her career opened the door for many future Black athletes, such as Arthur Ashe from yesterday’s episode.

On July 6th, 2020, The Caribbean Community Reparations Commission, or Caricom CRC, renewed their call for reparations from European colonial countries. The organization is made up of 15 Caribbean countries including Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. First formulated in 2014, the reparation plan for indigenous genocide and slavery included formal apologies, debt cancellation, and repatriation programs.
