On July 30, 1930, the first FIFA World Cup Final took place in Montevideo, Uruguay. In front of 93,000 people, the hosts triumphed over Argentina in a 4-2 victory. The Uruguayan government declared the following day a national holiday. Before the match, there was a disagreement between the two teams over whose ball to use. FIFA came up with a compromise: Argentina provided the ball for the first half, and Uruguay for the second.

On the same day in 1948, award-winning composer and musician Julia Tsenova was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. A trailblazer in Bulgarian contemporary music, her compositions were renowned for their drama and philosophical traits.

On July 30, 1975, the massacre of at least 12 students by police and soldiers in San Salvador, El Salvador, took place. Angered by the repressive acts of their dictatorship government, the students had gathered at the University of El Salvador for a peaceful demonstration. The massacre marked a turning point in the country’s history as students began to question if democracy was possible in El Salvador.
