On July 18, 1830, the first Constitution of Uruguay was enacted, five years after the country’s independence. It was in force until 1918. To mark the occasion, this day is now a public holiday in Uruguay.

On the same day in 1992, a photo was taken of Les Horribles Cernettes (or The Horrible CERN Girls). It became the first photo of a musical band posted on the World Wide Web. The all-female parody pop group consisted of four employees of CERN, the European Organization of Nuclear Research.

On July 18, 2012, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was appointed marshal, the country’s highest military rank. This move completed his control over the country’s state and military, sealing his total power.
