Hi, I’m Sen, and this is Today in History – the audio journey through time where you’ll learn about what happened on this day in years past! What’s more, you’ll practice your English listening skills and learn a few new words along the way!

I’d recommend listening to this episode twice. First time through, don’t worry about understanding exactly what is being said. It’s not about trying to recognize every word, but rather listening passively and getting used to the rhythm of the speech. Then, on the second time through, you can try and focus more on the words, phrases and their meaning.

Let’s begin. So, what happened today in history?

On July 15, 1858, British political activist Emmeline Pankhurst was born in Manchester, England. A leading light in the UK’s suffragette movement, she founded the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903. Her activism helped secure the vote for all British women over 21 by 1928. She died that year at the age of 69.

On the same day in 1907, Chinese revolutionary and writer Qiu Jin was executed by the military of China’s Qing Dynasty following a failed rebellion. Throughout her life, she spoke out about women’s rights and criticised the dynasty. She subsequently became a martyr of feminism and revolution in China.

How did you find that? Listening like this is a great way to absorb the general meaning. But, now, rewind, and have a second listen. Try focusing more on the individual words this time. See if you can understand as much of the whole episode as possible.

For now though, that’s all. Be sure to join me again tomorrow for another episode of Today in History.
