Ted: Susann is a Wendekind, but what is that? Well, the period of change surrounding the fall of East Germany is known as die Wende, which means something like change or turning point, so people who were children around this time are lovingly referred to as Wendekinder, even as adults. Susann grew up in East Berlin, in Marzahn, and she still likes to visit now and then. A favorite spot of her’s is the observation platform known as der Wolkenhain, or Cloud Grove, which is a pretty fitting name because it actually looks kind of like a grove of steel trees with a cloud floating at the top! From there, you can see the tourist attraction Die Gärten der Welt, or The Gardens of the World, green parks, little houses, and off in the distance, the giant Plattenbau, or prefab apartment building, where Susann grew up.
