Today's story comes from one of my colleagues. Let's listen in as Rop talks about tattoos, and how he almost became a tattoo artist himself!

Rop: Ich bin Redakteur bei Babbel. Ich liebe meinen Job: Texte schreiben macht mir Spaß.

Aber mein großer Traum sah anders aus! Schon mit 13 interessierte ich mich für Tattoos. Ich wollte viele Tätowierungen haben.

Aber nicht nur das. Ich wollte sie auch selber tätowieren! Stundenlang schaute ich Serien über Tattoos. Und ich fragte mich: “WIE werde ich … Tätowierer?”

Damals hatte ich kein Geld für eine Tattoo-Maschine. Aber ich fing an zu zeichnen. Meistens typische Tattoo-Motive: Rosen, Pin-Ups, Koi-Fische … Meine Freundinnen und Freunde fanden meine Zeichnungen toll.

Also machte ich weiter. Und dann postete ich die Zeichnungen auch auf Facebook. Ich bekam viele Likes.

Und ich lernte Leute aus der Tattoo-Szene kennen.

Ted: I'm not too surprised that Rop found an interest in tattoos, sometimes called Tätowierungen, and sometimes just Tattoos. Berlin is a bit of a tattoo-mecca. Not only do a lot of people have tattoos, especially in the more 'alternative' districts like Neukölln and Kreuzberg, there are also over 1000 studios across the city!

At 13, Rop already knew that he wanted to have a lot of tattoos (and I can tell you, he's definitely accomplished that goal), aber nicht nur das, but not only that. He also wanted to give people tattoos! However, he tells us: Leider hatte ich kein Geld für eine Tattoo-Maschine, "Unfortunately I didn’t have any money for a tattoo machine.” So he just started drawing tattoo designs and posting them online. The likes he got inspired him to keep at it!

Rop: Mit Anfang 20 ging ich oft in den bekannten Techno-Club Berghain.

An einem Abend hatte ich dort eine ganz besondere Begegnung. Der Club war wie immer super voll.

Und wie immer gab es vor den Toiletten eine lange Schlange. Ich wartete schon 10 Minuten.

Plötzlich war neben mir der Besitzer eines berühmten Tattoo-Studios. Und er sprach mich an.

— Hey, du bist Rop oder?

— Ja, hey!

Er kannte meine Zeichnungen! Von Facebook. Was für ein Zufall! Aber das war noch nicht alles. Er brauchte Hilfe in seinem Studio. Am Ende des Gesprächs bekam ich ein Praktikum.

Wow! Jackpot! Bald darauf ging es auch los.

In den ersten Monaten übernahm ich die typischen Arbeiten im Studio: Putzen, die Tattoos vorbereiten und Termine vereinbaren.

— Genau, Dienstag 12 Uhr. Wir sehen uns!

Und dann durfte ich endlich selber tätowieren. Zuerst übte ich auf Schweinehaut. Danach auf meinem Bein.

Schließlich hatte ich meine ersten Versuchskaninchen. Das waren immer Bekannte von mir.

Ted: Nice! That was lucky! As Rop was waiting in line for the toilet at the club Berghain, he struck up a conversation with a guy who just happened to be the owner of a famous tattoo studio in Berlin. He'd seen Rop's drawings on the internet, and needed some help in the studio, so he offered him an apprenticeship!

He started off cleaning, doing prep work, and booking appointments. He eventually got to practice tattooing for himself. He started on pig skin, Schweinehaut. Then he practiced on his own leg. And finally, he found some acquaintances to be his guinea pigs, or Versuchskaninchen, which roughly translates as “experiment bunnies”. So how did it go with these little bunnies? Let's find out!

Rop: Einmal kam ein guter Freund ins Studio.

— Hi!

— Hey!

Er hatte noch keine Tattoos und war sehr aufgeregt. Zuerst bereitete ich alles vor: die Maschine, Farben und dann kam das Design. Ich zeichnete ihm das Motiv auf sein Bein.

Er war sehr still und sagte nichts. Plötzlich fiel er auf den Boden! Oh nein! Was war los? Wir hatten doch noch gar nicht richtig angefangen!

Als er wieder wach war, sagte er:

— Sorry. Ich war so aufgeregt. Ich habe den ganzen Tag nichts gegessen.

Wir machten eine Pause. Nach einem Snack ging es weiter. Am Ende bekam er sein erstes Tattoo. Es wurde richtig gut!

Ted: Whoops! As Rop was drawing the design on his friend's leg, he suddenly fell to the floor - plötzlich fiel er auf den Boden. He fainted! And they hadn't even really started yet! This was his friend's first tattoo, and he explained he had been so excited that he hadn't eaten anything all day. I don't have any tattoos, but if I ever decide to get one, I'll make sure to not do it on an empty stomach, that's for sure! After that first little hiccup, the rest of the session went great, and Rop's friend ended up with a really awesome tattoo.

Rop: Nach einem halben Jahr kam mein Chef zu mir. Er sagte:

— Ich möchte mit dir reden.

Wow. Ich dachte: Endlich werde ich offiziell Tätowierer!

Wir gingen nach draußen. Dann sagte er zu mir:

— Rop. Deine Tattoos sind nicht gut. Ich habe mehr von dir erwartet. Du musst leider gehen.

Was? Es lief doch alles so gut! Ich packte meine Sachen und ging. Ich war am Boden zerstört. Aber ich wollte nicht aufgeben!

Ich hatte so viel gelernt. Ich musste weitermachen! Also kaufte ich mir eine Tattoo-Maschine. Und dann tätowierte ich weiter – in meinem Wohnzimmer.

Ted: Ahh, poor Rop! He was convinced that when his boss said, Ich möchte mit dir reden, "I’d like to speak with you", he was going to officially make him a tattooer. But exactly the opposite happened. He told him his tattoos weren't good and fired him. Rop was devastated, am Boden zerstört, literally “on the floor destroyed”. This was his dream! Ich wollte nicht aufgeben, he said, “I didn’t want to give up!” So he didn’t. He got his own tattoo machine, and started tattooing from his living room.

Rop: Das Tätowieren zuhause lief nicht schlecht. Und es gab echt verrückte Ideen … Mein bester Freund wollte Sommersprossen!

Sein Gesicht tätowieren? Verrückt! Aber ich wollte es ausprobieren.

Also malten wir stundenlang Punkte auf sein Gesicht. Wir diskutierten über jeden einzelnen Punkt.

Am Ende meinte er:

— Ach, das hat gar nicht weh getan. Es ist wie Botox.

Aber nicht alle Entscheidungen waren gut. Wie das Tattoo auf meinem Bein. Da ist jetzt mein Gesicht! Ja, mein … Gesicht.

Im Sommer schauen mir die Leute immer auf mein Bein. Egal, ich habe daraus gelernt.

Ted: Rop's friends had some crazy tattoo ideas! For example, Rop's best friend wanted him to tattoo freckles on his face! A little aside, but I love the German word for freckles, Sommersprossen. This literally means “summer sprouts”, which makes sense, right? They kind of “sprout” on your face during the summer! Anyway, after hours and hours of painting points on his friend's face, getting them juuuust right, Rop tattooed them on. According to his friend, it didn't hurt, das hat gar nicht weh getan, and felt just like Botox. I dunno why a young person needs Botox, but I'll take his word for it! It wasn't all easy though, Rop made mistakes too, like the tattoo he did on his own leg. It's a tattoo of his face. He absolutely hates it, but also looks at it as a lesson learned.

Rop: Nach ein paar Monaten wurden meine Tattoos immer besser! Ich hatte wieder Selbstvertrauen. Und ich bekam eine neue Chance - in Paris!

Leider lief es auch da nicht gut. Ich musste die ganze Zeit putzen. Ich wollte auch tätowieren. Doch mein Chef sagte:

— Im ersten Jahr tätowierst du nicht!

Was? Warum nicht? Ich hatte doch schon so viel Erfahrung. Ein Jahr lang nur Putzen?

Nein, das war für mich keine Option. Es war ein Zeichen. Ich musste nach etwas Neuem suchen. Ich bekam einen Job als Übersetzer.

So kam ich später auch zu Babbel. Es war nicht mein Plan. Aber, ich bin hier glücklich.

Doch wenn ich ganz ehrlich bin … ja, mir fehlt das Tätowieren sehr.

Ted: Rop kept getting better and better at tattooing, and found his confidence, Selbstvertrauen, again. And then something amazing happened. He got another offer to apprentice at a tattoo studio… this time in Paris! He moved there, all ready to start his new career as a tattoo artist, but alas… it wasn’t meant to be. Rop told me that he only worked at the studio for 11 days before his boss told him, Im ersten Jahr tätowierst du nicht! - “In the first year, you don’t tattoo!”. He couldn't imagine just cleaning for a whole year, so he left the studio. He ended up getting a job as a translator, Übersetzer, which eventually led him to Babbel, and back here to Berlin. He honestly really misses tattooing, but I think I speak for all of us here when I say we're glad his path led him to us. And who knows? Maybe when I decide to get my first tattoo, I'll have Rop do it for me.

There are two words that are especially important when making negative sentences in German, nicht and kein. You can think of nicht as “not”, like in the sentence: Deine Tattoos sind nicht gut! - "Your tattoos are not good". Kein is used to negate nouns, like in the sentence: Er hatte noch keine Tattoos - "He didn’t have any tattoos yet".
