Ted: On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. It had separated East and West Berlin for nearly thirty years, and with its fall, Daniel’s family could finally think about traveling, wir konnten endlich ans Reisen denken! Even though the wall had fallen, the borders had opened, and travel was possible again, Germany was still divided until October 1990. There was the FRG, or Federal Republic of Germany in the West, and the GDR, or German Democratic Republic in the East. You’ve probably noticed, but Daniel doesn’t say GDR, he says DDR, which stands for Deutsche Demokratische Republik, the German name for the former country. Because the GDR was still its own state, it had its own currency, the Ost-Mark, which wasn’t worth much outside East Germany. This would make planning a vacation to the Golden West, or Urlaub im goldenen Westen, pretty difficult!
