Emanuele: Ciao! Ti do il benvenuto al nostro podcast Prossima fermata: inglese. Oggi andremo insieme nel Midwest americano e precisamente in Michigan. Lo stato del Michigan è conosciuto per i suoi immensi laghi ed è anche considerato la culla dell’industria automobilistica statunitense.

In ogni episodio ascolteremo insieme un racconto proveniente dal mondo anglofono. Ti darò qualche informazione sul contesto oppure delle piccole dritte sulla lingua, ad esempio su un tema grammaticale. Ma attenzione, perché questo non è un podcast sulla grammatica. La cosa più importante è che tu ti diverta in compagnia delle nostre storie.

Oggi Natalie ci porterà in un’università del Michigan e ci racconterà della sua esperienza in una confraternita americana per donne. Nel nostro immaginario collettivo queste associazioni di studenti sono ricche di riti e segreti, ma negli Stati Uniti rappresentano una parte integrante della cultura universitaria. Infatti, in America una grossa fetta della vita studentesca si svolge proprio all’interno di queste associazioni. Quindi entrare a far parte di una confraternita è spesso una grande aspirazione di molti studenti universitari.

Natalie: I started going to the University of Michigan, very close to Detroit, in 2013. 

I was really excited about one thing: finding my sisters. No, not my real sisters, but my sorority sisters. 

At most American universities, there is a fraternity and sorority system. Fraternities and sororities are clubs for students. They focus on social activities and charity work.

In fraternities, men and women can join, but only women can join sororities. When you join a sorority, you become “sisters” with the other members.

Emanuele: Ecco, questa è una cosa che proprio non sapevo… Le donne possono diventare membri di una fraternity, cioè di una confraternita, ma gli uomini non possono entrare a far parte di una sorority, una sorellanza. Natalie era alla ricerca di un gruppo che facesse al caso suo. Per lei, infatti, era particolarmente importante l’impegno sociale, il charity work.

Natalie: After the first month of university, I found a sorority that I really liked. All of the women there were so friendly. Their charity focused on teaching adults to read, something that is very important to me. 

I was so happy when they asked me to join!

Being in a sorority is also about fun: there are dinners, parties and… special events.

One of my favorite special events was the yearly barn dance. 

Every fall, we rented a barn in the countryside and had a party inside. 

We also invited some guys from fraternities to be our dates. There was a lot of country music and, of course, dancing.

Emanuele: Certo che far parte di una confraternita deve essere proprio una bella esperienza. E a quanto pare ci si diverte pure, come alla barn dance. Barn significa “fienile” e dance ovviamente è “danza”, “ballo”. In pratica, la sorellanza di Natalie organizzava ogni anno una festa in campagna, in un fienile, e tutte le sorelle indossavano abiti adatti all’occasione ovvero camicie a scacchi e stivali da cowboy. E inoltre all’evento venivano invitati anche i ragazzi di altre confraternite.

 There are dinners and parties, there was a lot of country music. There is e there are significano rispettivamente “c’è” e “ci sono”. Proprio come in italiano, there is è utilizzato per il singolare, mentre there are è la forma plurale. Se invece stai parlando del passato e vuoi dire che “c’era qualcosa”, dovrai usare le espressioni there was, per il singolare, e there were, per il plurale. Fai attenzione a come Natalie utilizza queste forme nel resto della sua storia.

Natalie: The barn dance always happens around Halloween, so there was also a scary hayride. 

You sit in a wagon full of hay, and a tractor pulls you through a dark forest or field, where there are people in scary costumes. 

One year, we went on the hayride during the barn dance. It was me, my sorority sister Keely, our dates, Will and Joe, and some other friends. 

We started in the field next to the barn, and soon we were in the forest. There were lights in the forest, and they moved through the trees. 

There were also lots of scary sounds. 

We heard a loud scream from the darkness, and we all jumped and held each other. We were so scared! 

After we calmed down a bit, Keely turned to me and asked, “Where is Will?!”. He was gone!

Emanuele: Anche in Italia le usanze americane legate alla festa di Halloween stanno diventando sempre più di moda. Ma di una scary hayride, una corsa dell’orrore su un carro da fieno, non ne avevo mai sentito parlare. Immagino che sia come una sorta di corsa dentro la casa degli spettri, ma all’aria aperta. E infatti, nel racconto di Natalie, un trattore trascina un carro pieno di fieno attraverso una foresta buia. Ma da dove provengono le urla? E che fine ha fatto Will? 

Natalie: There was no sign of Will. Now we were scared again. We tried to tell the driver, but he didn’t hear us because the tractor was too loud. 

Did a ghost or devil take him? Did he fall off the wagon? Did he… DIE? 

We wanted to look for him, but we also wanted to stay alive. So we stayed in the wagon.

Emanuele: L’inquietante corsa sul fieno alla fine si è rivelata davvero spaventosa. There was no sign of Will – non c’era traccia di Will. Ma Natalie e gli altri erano davvero troppo terrorizzati per addentrarsi nel bosco a cercarlo. 

Natalie: We finally came back to the party, but Will still wasn’t there.

We jumped off the wagon, and ran to the barn.

On the way, something jumped out of the shadows. 

We almost had heart attacks! Then we heard laughing. It was Will! He had played a joke on us. When we heard the scream earlier, he jumped off the wagon, ran back to the barn, and waited in the shadows to scare us. 

At first, I was really angry with him, but then I started laughing too. 

We went back to the party, and spent the rest of the night dancing to country music. 

In the end, I’m so happy I had the chance to be in a sorority during university. 

Even though there were some scary moments, I found my sisters (and one or two brothers) for life!

I was part of an amazing group of women, I made a lot of friends, I worked for positive social change, and had fun at the same time.

Emanuele: Beh, devo dire che anch’io me la sarei presa con Will se mi avesse spaventato in quel modo. Ma alla fine Natalie non ha potuto far altro che riderci sopra. E oggi questa storia è uno dei tanti bei ricordi del periodo trascorso con la sua confraternita.
