Good news for all Depeche Mode fans. For the first time since the death of founding member Andrew Fletcher earlier this year, the band commented on its future, “hat sich [die Band] zu ihrer Zukunft geäußert”: they’ll continue as a duo. Once their new album comes out next spring, they’ll embark on a world tour. The songs and album title were decided on when Fletch was still around, which seems pretty uncanny in hindsight: the title is “Memento Mori”, Latin for “remember that you will die”, which the band takes as a reminder to relish or live each day to the fullest, “jeden Tag voll aus[zu]kosten”. They did miss Fletch in the studio, they say, especially “die Dinge, die man als selbstverständlich ansieht”, the things you take for granted. With more than 100 million records - or “Tonträgern” - sold, Depeche Mode is considered one of the most successful bands in the world.

Reuters: Fototermin mit Depeche Mode am Dienstag in Berlin. Zum ersten Mal seit dem Tod ihres Mitgründers Andrew Fletcher hat sich die britische Synthie-Pop-Band zu ihrer Zukunft geäußert. Dave Gahan und Martin Gore machen als Duo weiter. Im kommenden Frühjahr erscheint das Album „Memento Mori“, kurz darauf startet ihre Welttournee.

Die neuen Songs seien vor Fletchers Tod im Mai entstanden, sagte Martin Gore:

„Alle Songs und sogar der Albumtitel standen fest, bevor Andy starb. Der Albumtitel ist ‚Memento Mori‘. Das bedeutet ‚erinnere dich, dass du sterben wirst‘. Oder ‚du musst sterben, wirst sterben‘. Weißt du, das klingt sehr morbide, aber ich denke, man kann es auch sehr positiv sehen. Weißt du, jeden Tag voll auskosten. Ich glaube, so interpretieren wir es auch gerne.“

Sie hätten Andy Fletcher vermisst, sagte Dave Gahan:

„Bei einigen dieser Songs kann man natürlich nicht anders, als zu reflektieren. Und wenn wir zusammen im Studio waren, haben wir oft Witze gemacht und natürlich haben wir Fletch vermisst. Weißt du, Fletch hat irgendetwas kommentiert und das sind Dinge, die man an jemandem vermisst, wenn er nicht da ist. Die Dinge, die man als selbstverständlich ansieht, wenn sie da sind. Ich denke also, ich spreche auch für Martin, wenn ich sage, dass er in diesem Prozess wirklich vermisst wurde.“

Depeche Mode gelten mit mehr als 100 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern als eine der erfolgreichsten Bands der Welt.

Ted: How are you gearing up for autumn and winter this year? Germans are increasingly after one object: wood-burning stoves, or “Holzöfen”. Markus Huber, whose company sells them, tells us how the demand has skyrocketed. So much so that, unless a particular stove is in stock or “auf Lager”, clients face a long wait: “die Lieferzeiten”, the delivery times, can be close to a year and a half - up from about six or seven weeks in pre-covid times. Supply was strained when supply chains broke down due to the pandemic, and now rising oil and gas prices due to the war in Ukraine are driving up demand. Although the price for firewood has gone up too, Huber claims savings or “Einsparungen” of around 20 percent are still possible. He also tells us that the warmth of wood-burning stoves is just more cozy than that of a radiator or “Heizkörper” - then he’s off to install his next wood-burning stove.

Reuters: Markus Huber schneidet gerade noch das Rohr für den Holzofen zurecht. Seine Firma verkauft Holzöfen aller Art. Am Donnerstag baut Huber in Prutting bei Rosenheim eine neue Feuerstätte ein. Die Nachfrage nach Holzöfen ist stark gestiegen. Bei Öfen, die nicht bereits auf Lager sind, liegen die Lieferzeiten bei mittlerweile fast eineinhalb Jahren.
„Vor Corona […] waren wir so bei, ja, sechs Wochen, sieben Wochen, was wir [an] Lieferzeiten gehabt haben. Aber das ist eben mit Corona dann natürlich schon… sind diese Lieferketten einfach abgerissen, hat [es] da schon Schwierigkeiten gegeben. Und jetzt ist natürlich die Nachfrage seit der Ukrainekrise, [also] seit einfach Öl und Gas so extrem teuer geworden ist, immens angestiegen.“
Die Kosten für Brennholz sind zwar auch sehr angestiegen, laut Huber sind trotzdem um die 20 Prozent Einsparungen möglich. So ein Ofen kostet insgesamt circa 3000 Euro.
„Das eine ist einfach, die Wärme ist behaglicher, gemütlicher, [als] wenn man nur mit Heizkörper heizt. Und das zweite ist natürlich einfach auch eine Kosteneinsparung.“
Markus Huber fährt direkt zum nächsten Kunden, um einen neuen Holzofen einzubauen.

Ted: As Brazil awaits the run-off between former president Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva and the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, we revisit the results of the first round of voting earlier this month. Leftist Lula da Silva obtained 48.4 percent, “hat 48,4 Prozent […] erzielt”, while 43.4 percent of the vote fell to, or “entfielen [auf]”, the right-wing Bolsonaro. In other words, neither of the contestants was able to garner half of the votes, “[konnte] die Hälfte der Stimmen auf sich vereinen”, contrary to what was expected; hence “die Stichwahl”, the run-off. Based on pre-election polls, Lula da Silva was predicted to win by a bigger margin. The country is deeply divided, and the much tighter result, “das sehr viel knappere Ergebnis”, ruins hopes for a quick solution, “macht Hoffnungen auf eine schnelle Lösung […] zunichte”. At least the two candidates were both happy with their results in the first round.

Reuters: Die erste Runde geht an ihn: Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva, genannt Lula, hat bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen in Brasilien 48,4 Prozent der Stimmen erzielt. Auf den Amtsinhaber Jair Bolsonaro entfielen demnach 43,3 Prozent. Weil keiner von ihnen mehr als die Hälfte der Stimmen auf sich vereinen konnte, geht es am 30. Oktober in die Stichwahl zwischen dem rechtsgerichteten Bolsonaro und dem linksgerichteten Ex-Präsidenten Lula.
Dieser äußerte sich optimistisch: „Wir wollten diese Wahlen gewinnen und ich möchte Ihnen sagen, dass wir diese Wahlen auch gewinnen werden. Das hier ist für uns nur eine Verlängerung.“
Bolsonaro äußerte sich ebenfalls zuversichtlich. „Wir werden gute Bündnisse schließen, um die Wahl zu gewinnen. Mehr kann ich dazu noch nicht sagen.“
Mehrere Vorwahl-Umfragen hatten Lula da Silva bis zu 15 Prozentpunkte vor Bolsonaro gesehen. Das sehr viel knappere Ergebnis macht Hoffnungen auf eine schnelle Lösung für das politisch stark gespaltene Land zunichte.
