Ted: Summer has barely gone by, but in the Alpine regions, cowbells already announce the arrival of autumn. Cows are being herded from the mountains down to the valleys, “[werden] vom Berg ins Tal getrieben”, after having spent the summer at higher altitudes. With some cows decorated for the occasion, the sight attracts locals and those from further afield: an exchange student, “[eine] Austauschschülerin”, from New Zealand, is also attending the “Almabtrieb”, as the custom, or “das Brauchtum”, is called. Now, the young cattle, “das Jungvieh”, will be separated and each returned to its respective owner. So, let’s head to the Allgäu region in the German Alps, and while we’re there, keep your ears open for the “Allgäuerisch” dialect. If you have any trouble understanding, read along with the transcript!
