Ted: The problem may - currently - be in France, but the solution comes from all over Europe: firefighters from a number of countries are supporting their French colleagues in the fight against the forest fires, “im Kampf gegen Waldbrände”. High temperatures and a lack of rain are giving the crews a hard time, “machen den Trupps […] zu schaffen”. As a consequence, “die Verstärkung”, or the backup, is very welcome. The German support initiative is led by Martin Haselbauer of the fire brigade in Bonn, who tells us that “aus unserer Sicht”, from our perspective, it’s just a matter of solidarity. It’s how the EU’s civil protection mechanism, “der Katastrophenschutzmechanismus der EU”, works. There is an added benefit, though, namely learning from others’ operational procedures or “Einsatzverfahren”. Let’s listen in.
