Ted: For the first time, a rainbow flag was hoisted in front of the German Ministry of the Interior, “vor dem Bundesinnenministerium”, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The rainbow flag, “die Regenbogenflagge”, is a symbol of acceptance towards the diversity of ways of life, “Akzeptanz gegenüber der Vielfalt der Lebensformen”. The Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called this moment historic, saying the flag celebrates a self-confident affirmation, “ein selbstbewusstes Bekenntnis”, of one’s sexual identity. But, Faeser said, it also admonishes us, “sie mahnt uns auch”, because so many people still experience discrimination precisely because of this affirmation. It’s a reminder to take a stand, “Haltung zu zeigen”.
