Rodrigo: ¡Hola! Bienvenida y bienvenido a un nuevo episodio de Un mundo en inglés. Mi nombre es Rodrigo y en este pódcast me gustaría que me acompañaras en una vuelta por el mundo virtual. En cada episodio escucharemos una historia divertida del mundo angloparlante, claro está, en inglés. Aquí estoy para que aprendas conmigo nuevas palabras y repasemos brevemente algún tema de gramática.

En este nuevo episodio, vamos a descubrir la naturaleza más salvaje del estado de Minnesota, en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y Canadá. Y te lo adelanto ya… ¡prepárate para un viaje lleno de emociones fuertes!

Hoy Todd nos va a hablar de unos días de camping por Minnesota, en los que experimentó muy de cerca la fuerza de la naturaleza…

Todd: In the Spring of 2003, my five college housemates and I were one month from graduation. This was our last chance to have a big adventure.

We decided to go camping in the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota, on the Canadian border.

The Boundary Waters is a huge wilderness area, almost twice the size of Luxembourg, and it has more than 1,000 lakes. You can’t drive a motorboat there – you can only use a canoe and your own two feet.

There are no houses, no cabins, and no shops – only clean lakes, tall trees, and lots of wilderness.

Campers bring everything they need, and take out all the garbage and anything they don’t use.

We prepared for our long trip – we bought food, collected our things, and planned our route. We loaded our canoes onto the tops of our cars, and drove north.

Rodrigo: Todd y sus amigos cargaron, loaded, sus canoas en el auto y se fueron hacia el norte. ¿Su destino? The Boundary Waters. A huge wilderness area, una inmensa zona salvaje, con parques nacionales, animales salvajes y… ¡más de 1000 lagos! Naturaleza en estado puro, sin casas, cabañas, ni comercios, no houses, no cabins, and no shops. Y para desplazarse, nuestros protagonistas solo disponían de sus canoas y de sus pies, you can only use a canoe and your own two feet. ¡Más vale estar en forma para descubrir este increíble territorio!

Todd: After four hours, we arrived and breathed in the cool, crisp air. We were ready to paddle.

We paddled over calm waters and enjoyed the sunny skies and the peaceful sounds of nature. Then…

A big beaver slapped his tail on the water.

A warning – we were too close to his cozy home. We reached the other side of the first small lake, and then it was time to portage.

To portage, you take all of your heavy things out of the canoe, carry them to the next lake, and then go back to get your empty canoe.

After five hours and three more long lakes, we finally arrived at our campsite. We only saw four other people the whole day!

Rodrigo: Cool, crisp air, calm waters, sunny skies and the peaceful sounds of nature, aire fresco, aguas tranquilas, cielos soleados y los apacibles sonidos de la naturaleza… ¡Con este magnífico paisaje se encontraron nuestros protagonistas al llegar! Por cierto, ¿lo has notado? En inglés, los adjetivos, que son palabras que usamos para describir a alguien o algo, siempre se colocan delante de los sustantivos y, al revés de lo que sucede en español, nunca varían. Así, por ejemplo, se dice a big beaver en singular y big beavers en plural, sin que el adjetivo big, grande, cambie. Pero volvamos a nuestra historia, parece que a beaver, un castor, es el único vecino de Todd y sus amigos… Aunque la verdad, sospecho que se encontrarán con otros animales salvajes en su camino… ¿Tú qué crees?

Todd: The weather was still perfect, so we unpacked our gear and set up our tents.

Then we took our dirty clothes off, ran to the lake, and jumped into the cold, crystal clear water. It was so cold, but so relaxing after all the hard work.

Then we climbed back on shore to relax in the warm sun. We almost fell asleep right there, when my friend John suddenly gasped.

“A moose!” he said.

We all looked, and saw a beautiful female with two young ones. We all stopped. The 2-meter tall moose looked at us, and we looked at the moose.

Then the mother ran toward us – fast (an angry mother moose with her babies is verrry dangerous). So we jumped back into the water – even faster!

Moose can swim, but we were lucky. The mother stopped near the water. We escaped – for now.

Rodrigo: Después de tanto esfuerzo, entiendo que Todd y sus amigos quisieran descansar un poco. Pero justo cuando se estaban quedando dormidos, se dieron cuenta de que no estaban solos… Tenían justo enfrente a ellos a beautiful moose… ¡Un magnífico alce! ¿Era una oportunidad increíble? A primera vista sí, pero el problema es que se trataba de una madre alce enfurecida, an angry mother moose, con sus dos crías… ¡Ayuda! Nuestros protagonistas tuvieron que saltar de nuevo al agua, we jumped back into the water, y al final consiguieron escapar… We escaped – for now. Por lo menos, de momento. ¿Crees que Todd y sus amigos vivirán más situaciones peligrosas?

Todd: We put our dry clothes on again and took a deep breath. But we had a new problem: the sky was now very dark, and on the horizon we saw a huge, whirling storm cloud.

It was a strong storm, and it was coming fast. We ran back to our tents and put everything inside for the night. We were all scared – we were far away from any building, civilization, or help.

The heavy rain, wind, thunder and lightning were super loud inside the tents, but we were really tired, so we all fell asleep.

I woke up in the morning with wet feet and sore arms. The storm was gone, but my old tent was lying on its side, and lots of water was on the floor.

I crawled out and was relieved to see the blue sky. But I smelled something strange – and then, I heard a strange voice!

“Hey, is anybody there?!” I walked out to the shoreline and saw two park rangers in a canoe – and then I saw the fire! Just 10 meters from my tent, a huge tree was split in two.

It was hit by lightning in the night… and was still on fire. The park rangers said: “We saw that tree on fire and wanted to make sure everything is ok!”

Boy, were we lucky! The lightning just missed us and our tents. After two dangerous situations with a mother moose and a bolt of lightning, we enjoyed the rest of our wilderness adventure.

But now we had a new respect for the power of mother nature!

Rodrigo: Heavy rain, wind, thunder and lightning, una fuerte lluvia, viento, truenos y relámpagos… Después de haber escapado de la fauna salvaje, Todd y sus amigos tuvieron que hacer frente a unas condiciones meteorológicas extremas con una tormenta que se acercaba. ¡Pero esta no les impidió dormir como osos!
A la mañana siguiente, Todd se despertó con los brazos doloridos, sore arms, y con los pies mojados, wet feet, ¡el agua había entrado a su tienda! Además, había un olor raro en el aire... y de repente Todd escuchó: Hey, is anybody there?! ¡¿Hay alguién ahí?! ¿Pero qué hacían los guardias forestales, park rangers, ahí si la tormenta, storm, ya había pasado?

¡Increíble! Pues resulta que durante la noche, un rayo había caído sobre un árbol justo al lado de las tiendas de nuestros protagonistas y… ¡este todavía estaba ardiendo!
Un alce enfurecido, una tormenta, un incendio… ¿demasiadas emociones fuertes? ¡Pues por lo visto no! Todd y sus amigos siguieron disfrutando de su aventura en The Boundary Waters…
