Soy Rodrigo, tu guía en este pódcast, y te invito a que me acompañes en una vuelta por el mundo virtual. En cada episodio escucharemos una historia divertida del mundo angloparlante que escucharemos en inglés, ¡claro! Pero no te preocupes… juntos aprenderemos nuevas palabras que te serán muy útiles y repasaremos muy brevemente algún tema relacionado con la gramática inglesa.

Hoy Sam nos va a contar una aventura de su infancia en Australia. Pero antes de descubrir esta nueva historia, prefiero avisarte de que a los Aussies, así es como los australianos mismos se hacen llamar, les encanta utilizar palabras y expresiones coloquiales… Así que, ¡escucha con mucha atención!

Sam: G'day! My name is Sam. I’m an Aussie. I grew up in Sydney – that’s the biggest city in Australia. And when I was a kid we had a ripper of a holiday home in a place called Woy Woy.

Woy Woy is on the coast, one and a half hours north of Sydney by train. To go there you travel through a national park.

Woy Woy means ‘lots of water’ in Darkinjung – that’s the language of the local aboriginal people.

So in these days my grandpa worked in Woy Woy. He bought an old boathouse that he turned into a holiday home!

And when I was a kid we went there every summer for two whole weeks. Those summers were sweet as!

We swam, chilled, and because the house was next to the water, we could fish out the window. That was the best!

Rodrigo: Sam pasaba todos sus veranos en Woy Woy, un pequeño lugar de la costa, al norte de Sydney, cuyo nombre significa lots of water, mucha agua, en el idioma aborigen local. ¿Y cómo eran las vacaciones de Sam? We had a ripper of a holiday home! En inglés coloquial australiano, la expresión a ripper significa genial y su significado es muy similar al de sweet as: Those summers were sweet as! – ¡Aquellos veranos eran fantásticos! En esta frase, Sam utiliza el demostrativo plural those: those summers – aquellos o esos veranos. En inglés, those se utiliza para hablar de cosas que están lejos de nosotros, sea en el espacio o en un tiempo pasado. En cambio, si queremos hablar de cosas que tenemos cerca, usamos these: These apples here look good – Estas manzanas se ven ricas. Those y these son demostrativos en plural, ¿y cuáles son las formas en singular? Para algo que se sitúa lejos usamos that, That summer three years ago was fantastic! – ¡Aquel verano de hace tres años fue fantástico! Y para algo que está a poca distancia, this: This summer I will travel to Australia – Este verano voy a viajar a Australia. Escucha con atención el resto de la historia, ya que Sam va a usar varios demostrativos.

Sam: In 2006, we went to Woy Woy for the summer holidays as usual. I was 10 years old. It was New Year’s Day and I was with my parents in the house.

That arvo was a scorcher - 45 degrees outside! I was lying on a couch by the window and my dad was reading to me. I was thirsty, so I went to get a drink.

I got up and looked out of the window. Can you guess what I saw? Smoke! I saw smoke in the sky on the other side of the bay.

I was so shocked I said “Hooly dooley!”. My dad was surprised at this. He said “Struth mate, what’s wrong?”

He stood up to see what I was looking at, and that was when he started swearing…

My mum was confused: “What’s with all this swearing, guys?” She asked. “You sound like a couple of sailors!” Then she saw it too. “Oh crikey, look at all those houses on fire!”

On the other side of the bay the national park was on fire! “Look at all those fire trucks,” I said.

Rodrigo: That arvo was a scorcher – Esa tarde hizo muchísimo calor. ¿Lo habías descifrado? La verdad es que yo tampoco sabía que arvo es una manera coloquial de referirse a la tarde y que a scorcher describe algo extremadamente caliente. Pero el mayor problema no era la temperatura casi infernal… ¡El parque nacional justo enfrente de Woy Woy y varias casas estaban en llamas! Hooly dooley, struth mate, crikey son todas expresiones familiares para mostrar sorpresa o incluso estupor. What’s with all this swearing, guys? La madre de Sam les preguntó a los chicos por qué decían tantas palabrotas… Claro, ella todavía no sabía lo que estaba pasando, pero en cuanto vio las llamas también se sorprendió mucho.

Sam: So this was the problem: There’s only one road into Woy Woy and it was blocked by the fire. That was it - we were trapped!

The only way out was to jump into the bay, but the fire wasn’t too close yet…

So, what did we do? We waited. And we threw buckets of water on small fires, that was all we could do!

The fire came closer and more houses were in danger, not only those on the other side of the bay but also the houses on this side.

Some people from this side of the bay got in their boats and went to rescue the people on that side. We sat in the garden.

Some people just watched their houses burn down.

Rodrigo: ¡Qué horror! ¡La única carretera para salir de Woy Woy estaba cortada por las llamas. ¡El incendio se había extendido y ahora también las casas de este lado de la bahía, the houses on this side of the bay, corrían peligro! Sam y su familia estaban atrapados, they were trapped. ¿Crees que nuestra familia podrá salvar su casa?

Sam: And then the helicopters came. The helicopters carried water to drop on the fire. It was a strange and beautiful sight.

All those people in boats and the helicopters and the smoke and the sparks dancing in the dark evening sky.

So our house didn’t burn down. But every time I see a news report about bushfires in Australia I remember that day.

I remember how quickly you can get into trouble. These things happen all the time!

But I also remember how all those people helped each other. Our neighbors were there for each other in an emergency. That’s what I remember the most - It was far out!

Rodrigo: It was far out! ¡Era alucinante! Tenemos aquí otra expresión coloquial en inglés australiano. Y la verdad es que la situación era increíble… Imagínate el ruido de los helicópteros, helicopters, el humo, smoke, y la luz de las chispas, sparks… ¡Menos mal que al final nuestros protagonistas consiguieron salvar su casa! Sam nunca pudo olvidar aquel verano… Y por desgracia, los terribles incendios que arrasan Australia cada año siempre le recuerdan lo que vivió siendo niño. Pero no todo fue negativo y lo que realmente más impactó a Sam fue la solidaridad entre los vecinos de Woy Woy...
