In this podcast, we’ll take a virtual tour of different parts of the French-speaking universe and discover real-life stories — in French, of course! Now, are you a festival fan? Well, today’s storyteller, Anne-Sophie, certainly is. We’ll follow her to La Courneuve, which is five miles north-east of Paris. Here, a very unusual festival takes place each year in the second week of September — La fête de l’Huma — ‘The Festival of Humanity’.

This event, which is a mix of funfair, music festival, fundraiser and political rally, has been run by communist volunteers since its creation in 1930 by the left-wing daily paper L’Humanité. It’s a festival for everyone and there are stands selling food and drink from all parts of France and many other world nations. Over the years, famous artists such as Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd and The Chemical Brothers have played there at the festival.
So, let’s go!

Anne-Sophie: En septembre 2014, et comme tous les ans, je vais à la fête de l’Humanité au nord de Paris.

À la fête de l’Huma, il y a vraiment tout : des concerts, des expositions, des débats politiques, des conférences, un salon du livre et même une course de 10km le dimanche pour les plus courageux !

Moi, en général, le dimanche soir, je suis complètement H.S. parce que j’ai beaucoup dansé et bu et … pas assez dormi.

Ce que j’aime surtout là-bas, c’est découvrir la cuisine française. C’est le rêve pour les amoureux de la cuisine : bœuf bourguignon, huîtres bretonnes, accras de morue antillais, tartiflette, il y a toutes les spécialités françaises !

Sam: It’s 2014 and, comme tous les ans, “like every year”, Anne-Sophie goes to la fête de l’Huma. She says: il y a vraiment tout — “there’s really everything”: Concerts, exhibitions, political debates, conferences, a book fair and even a six-mile Sunday run!
Anne-Sophie admits that by Sunday evening she’s generally H.S. — an acronym for hors service, meaning “out of service”. In other words, she’s wiped out from lots of dancing, drinking, and lack of sleep.
What she likes above all là-bas (“there at the festival”) is discovering French cuisine: Beef stew from Burgundy, oysters from Brittany, cod fritters from the Antilles, and tartiflette, which is a gratin from the Alps… all the French specialities are there!

Anne-Sophie: J’arrive le vendredi soir et je retrouve deux amis sur le stand du 13e arrondissement de Paris. Ils sont bénévoles pour le festival et travaillent au bar-snack. Mais ils veulent aller voir le concert de Massive Attack, alors avec une amie, on propose de les remplacer trois heures.

On se partage les tâches avec Amanda : elle s’occupe de cuire la viande au barbecue et moi, je m’occupe des boissons et des commandes. Au début, tout va bien. Il n’y a pas trop de monde: une famille, deux groupes d’amis et un couple.

Sam: She arrives on Friday evening and meets two friends at the stand of Paris’s 13e arrondissement — Paris’s “13th quarter”. Ils sont bénévoles — “They’re volunteers” at the festival and working at a snack bar. They want to see the Massive Attack concert, so Anne-Sophie and a friend offer to stand in for them for three hours.
She and her friend Amanda divy up the tasks. Amanda cooks the meat and Anne-Sophie takes care of the drinks and the orders: Je m’occupe des boissons et des commandes. Now here’s a quick tip — “to order” is commander but “to give an order” is ordonner !
Anne-Sophie tells us that to start with tout va bien: “everything goes well”. It’s not too busy… now, I don’t know about you, but I smell trouble!

Anne-Sophie: C’est la première fois que je suis derrière un bar et je dois admettre que je ne suis pas très douée : mes bières ont beaucoup trop de mousse, mes cocktails sont mal dosés et je suis vraiment lente. Bon, heureusement, les clients sont très patients.

À 18h, c’est l’heure de l’apéro : il y a de plus en plus de monde et les gens commencent à attendre.

Je sers les bières, les verres de vins, les cocktails le plus vite possible. Amanda enchaîne les merguez et les steaks. Et tout à coup, je vois des flammes.

Sam: It’s the first time that Anne-Sophie has worked behind a bar and she has to admit: je ne suis pas très douée, she’s not very skilled at it. There’s too much foam on her beer, her cocktails are badly mixed and she’s really slow. But fortunately, her customers are very patient.
At 6 p.m. it’s l’heure de l’apéro: time for an “aperitif”. In case you’ve not had an aperitif, it’s a pre-dinner drink, which nowadays can end up as just snacks and drinks without the dinner! In any case, it’s getting busier and people are having to wait to get served. Anne-Sophie is serving drinks as quickly as possible, Amanda is grilling the spicy merguez sausages and steaks. Et tout à coup — all of a sudden — Anne-Sophie sees flames!

Anne-Sophie: Je tourne la tête et je vois que c’est le barbecue qui prend feu ! Je cherche l’extincteur mais rien ! Pas d’extincteur. J’ai très peur pour les clients qui se trouvent sur le stand. Mais ils ne sont pas du tout effrayés : ils rient, ils dansent, ils parlent.

Il y a du monde au bar pour commander des steaks et des merguez à côté des flammes ! C’est surréaliste !

Tout à coup, Amanda me dit : “C’est la graisse qui brûle ! Elle tombe sur la bouteille de gaz ! Je sais pas quoi faire ! ”

Sam: Anne-Sophie turns to see the barbeque catching fire. She looks for a fire extinguisher but rien — “nothing”! No extinguisher. She’s very afraid for the customers but says: ils ne sont pas du tout effrayés — “they’re not frightened at all”! They’re laughing, dancing, chatting. Everyone at the bar's ordering steaks and merguez next to the flames! It’s surreal. Amanda says that it’s the meat fat that’s burning, and that the burning fat is dripping onto the gas bottle. If the gas bottle blows up there will be no more snack bar — she doesn’t know what to do!

Anne-Sophie: À ce moment-là, je pense que la bouteille de gaz va exploser à cause de la chaleur. J’imagine l’explosion. Je suis terrifiée.

Et j’ai vraiment peur pour le stand et les clients : toute la structure est en bois et le barbecue est très près du bar.

Tant pis pour l’extincteur, il faut trouver quelque chose de grand pour couvrir le barbecue et éteindre les flammes !

Sam: At this point, Anne-Sophie thinks that the heat — la chaleur — is going to make the gas bottle explode. She’s terrified! She uses that word again: toute. Toute la structure est en bois — “The whole structure is made of wood”. Tant pis pour l’extincteur. “Never mind the extinguisher”, they have to find something big to cover the barbeque and put out (éteindre) the flames! Will they find something? Let’s find out…

Anne-Sophie: Heureusement, on trouve un grand couvercle en métal et une vieille couverture. Et ça marche ! Ouf ! Pas d’explosion, pas d’incendie. Juste une odeur très désagréable de graisse brûlée. Mais tout le monde va bien.

Alors je m’assois derrière le bar pour reprendre mes esprits. Et j’entends: “Trois merguez et deux steaks s'il vous plaît !” C’est un client qui fait une commande. Et c’est tellement inattendu que j’ai un gros fou rire.

Sam: Fortunately, they find a large metal cover plate and an old blanket. Et ça marche ! “It works!” Ouf ! “Phew!” No explosion and no fire. There’s just a very disagreeable smell of burnt fat. But everybody’s fine: Tout le monde va bien. So fine in fact that when Anne-Sophie sits down to collect her wits she hears: “Three merguez and two steaks please!” A customer placing an order! It’s so unexpected that she has a fit of the giggles.

Anne-Sophie: Depuis cet événement, ne vous inquiétez pas, je retourne avec plaisir à la fête de l’Huma pour manger des huîtres, voir des concerts et danser. Mais je reste loin des barbecues !

Sam: Since this event, Anne-Sophie tells us, she still enjoys going to the festival to eat oysters, watch concerts and to dance. But she’s learned her lesson and je reste loin des barbecues — she stays well away from barbecues! Sounds like a wise move, right?

Speaking of words to the wise, did you catch all those useful expressions with tout? We heard tout à coup, meaning “all of a sudden”, and the handy little phrase pas du tout — “not at all”. In these phrases, tout means “all”, but tout can be translated slightly differently: Toute la structure means “the whole structure”, for example, and tout le monde means “everybody”. Tout est clair ? All clear?
