Sam: Bonjour and welcome to French en route! My name’s Sam and I’m a huge fan of all things French. In this podcast, we’ll take a virtual tour of different parts of the French-speaking universe and discover real-life stories — in French, of course! I'll be here to guide you along the way, explain unusual vocabulary and give you some context and background to the stories. Today we’ll meet Maria-Stella, who is going to tell us how she met her future husband — son futur mari.

So, buckle up and let’s go… On y va !!!

Maria-Stella was born in France but her parents are originally from a little country in West Africa called Bénin — a country she loves, where she feels at home, and one which is very important to the story she’s about to tell.

Maria-Stella: Je m’appelle Maria-Stella et je vais vous raconter comment j’ai rencontré mon futur mari !

Moi, je suis née en France mais mes parents sont originaires du Bénin, un petit pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest.

J’adore ce pays, je me sens bien là-bas. En fait, je me sens chez moi au Bénin. Vous verrez, c’est important dans mon histoire.

Tout commence sur Facebook en décembre 2016. À cette époque, je suis un peu déprimée et je me sens seule parce que toutes mes amies sont en couple sauf moi…

Alors, pour me divertir, je passe beaucoup de temps sur les réseaux sociaux.

Sam: Maria-Stella tells us that it all began on Facebook in December 2016. À cette époque — “At that time”, she says, she’s a bit depressed and feels lonely because all of her friends are coupled up except for her… So in order to divert herself she spends a lot of time on social media.

Maria-Stella: Très vite, je parle avec un jeune homme qui s’appelle Thomas. Thomas est très sympa et on aime discuter ensemble.

Un jour, il m’envoie la vidéo d’un chanteur que je ne connais pas. C’est une chanson d’amour. Elle s’appelle Dis-lui. Je l’écoute.

J’aime beaucoup la mélodie et la voix du chanteur est magnifique. Alors j’écoute encore la chanson. Une fois, deux fois, trois fois.

Tous les jours, j’écoute cette chanson en boucle. En fait, j’oublie totalement Thomas, je ne pense qu’au chanteur de Dis-lui…

Alors je le cherche sur Facebook et je lui envoie un message privé.

Sam: Very quickly, Maria-Stella is chatting with a young guy named Thomas. He’s very nice and they like talking together. Un jour — “One day”, she says, he sends her a video of a singer she doesn’t know. It’s a love song called Dis-lui, which means “Tell him”. She listens to it and really likes the melody and the singer’s voice, so she listens to it again — once, twice, three times! Tous les jours — “every day”,  she listens to this song en boucle — “on repeat”. In fact she totally forgets poor Thomas and thinks only about the singer of Dis-lui… so she searches for the singer on Facebook and sends him a message.

Maria-Stella: Le lendemain, l’artiste me répond. Génial, il est rapide ! On parle de sa chanson, de sa vie, de ma vie.

J’apprends qu’il s’appelle Giovanni, qu’il habite à Boston, aux États-Unis et qu’il est né … au Bénin ! Comme mes parents… Quelle coïncidence !

Moi, à ce moment-là, je ne pense pas à l’amour : je viens de finir un stage et je cherche du travail.

Je prépare des entretiens en anglais pour travailler dans une banque mais parler en anglais me stresse.

Alors Giovanni propose de m’aider : on se téléphone tous les jours et on parle en anglais. Petit à petit, je progresse en anglais et bien sûr… je tombe amoureuse.

Sam: The next day, he responds! Brilliant, she says, he’s fast. They chat about his song, about his life and her life. She learns that he’s called Giovanni, he lives in Boston and that he was born in… Bénin! Just like her parents — what a coincidence!

À ce moment-là — “at that moment”, Maria-Stella insists, she isn’t thinking about l’amour: je viens de finir un stage — “I’ve just finished an internship… and am looking for work”. She’s preparing to do interviews in English so she can work in a bank but speaking English stresses her out. So, Giovanni offers to help her: They’ll telephone every day and speak in English. Petit à petit — “little by little” — her English progresses and, of course, she falls in love: je tombe amoureuse.

Maria-Stella: Quelques semaines plus tard, j’ai le travail de mes rêves ! Giovanni est heureux pour moi et il m’invite 10 jours à Boston pour les vacances.

Je suis très contente mais j’ai aussi très peur de la réaction de mes parents : je n’ai jamais rencontré cet homme…

Alors est-ce que c’est raisonnable d’aller chez lui aux États-Unis ?

Giovanni comprend le problème, il doit rassurer mes parents : alors il écrit un mail à mon père pour lui demander la permission.

À ce moment-là, je pense que mon père va dire non parce qu’il est vraiment protecteur.

Sam: Quelques semaines plus tard — “a few weeks later”, Maria-Stella tells us, she has the job of her dreams! Giovanni is happy for her and invites her on a ten day vacation to Boston. She’s super happy but she’s also super scared about her parents' reaction: She’s never met this guy… so is it a good idea to go to his place in the US?

Giovanni gets it — he has to reassure her parents and so he writes an email to her dad to ask his permission. At that moment, she thinks her dad’s gonna say no because he’s really protective…

Maria-Stella: Mais pas du tout ! Mon père accepte. C’est super ! Le 12 avril 2017, je prends donc un avion pour Boston.

Je suis très stressée et je passe les 7 heures du vol à me poser des questions : et s’il n’est pas beau ? et s’il mange la bouche ouverte ? et s’il est complètement désordonné ? et si ça ne marche pas entre nous ?

Bref, c’est le voyage le plus long de ma vie !

Finalement, j’arrive à l’aéroport, les portes automatiques s’ouvrent, il est là, il sourit. Je souris aussi. Et c’est comme une évidence.

La peur disparaît. Pendant dix jours, nous sommes sur un petit nuage. Je sais que c’est l’homme de ma vie.

Sam: But her dad wasn’t over protective this time, he’s cool with her going, and on the 12th April 2017 she jumps on a flight to Boston. She’s super stressed and spends the seven-hour flight asking herself questions: What if he’s not good looking? What if he eats with his mouth open? What if he’s completely messy? What if it doesn’t work out between us? In short, it was the longest journey in Maria-Stella’s life.

Finally, she gets to the airport, the automatic doors open and he’s there, smiling. She smiles too and there’s the proof, the fear disappears. Pendant dix jours — “for ten days”, they’re on cloud nine — literally “on a little cloud”, sur un petit nuage. She knows this is the guy for her!

So what next?

Maria-Stella: Bien sûr les dix jours passent trop vite et je dois déjà rentrer en France… Je pleure dans l’avion comme une ado parce que je crois que c’est fini.

Mais en fait, c’est le début d’une grande histoire d’amour ! Pendant un an, nous vivons une relation à distance entre la France et les États-Unis.

Et en 2019, nous allons à Cotonou, au Bénin, pour la cérémonie de “la petite dot”. La petite dot, c’est une tradition très importante et au Bénin c’est le futur mari qui donne une dot à la famille de la future femme.

Pendant la cérémonie, Giovanni offre des cadeaux à mes parents : une enveloppe d’argent et des boissons. Cette dot, c’est le symbole de son engagement.

Mais il a aussi une surprise pour moi : il chante “Dis-lui”, sa chanson d’amour devant nos familles. Tout le monde est très ému.

Sam: Of course the ten days pass in the blink of an eye and she has to return to France. She cries on the plane comme une ado — “like an adolescent” — because she thinks it’s over. But in fact it’s the beginning of a great love story!

For a year they maintain a long-distance relationship between France and the US.  And in 2019, they go to Cotonou in Bénin for la petite dot ceremony. La dot, in case you were wondering, is “the dowry”, and it’s a very important tradition in Bénin in which the groom gives a dowry to the family of the bride-to-be. During the ceremony, Giovanni offers her parents gifts: An envelope of money, and drinks. This dowry is a symbol of their engagement. But he also has a surprise for her: He sings Dis-lui, his love song, in front of their families. Everyone is very moved.

If you were able to focus on anything other than the romance of Maria-Stella’s story, you may have noticed a few time expressions she used. For example:

à cette époque, meaning “at that time”,
à ce moment-là, which means “at that moment”
and pendant, which can mean “for”. Pendant dix jours — “for ten days”, for example. But it can also mean “during”, as in: pendant la cérémonie : “during the ceremony”.
