By now, you probably already know how this works: you’ll hear a Spanish dialogue twice. During the first listen, sit back and relax, and let yourself get used to how Spanish sounds! Then I’ll explain the key vocabulary and expressions, and after that, you’ll hear the dialogue a second time. You don’t need to understand everything on the first or second go, just slowly get familiar with how real Spanish sounds, and try to pick up some of the new vocabulary.

¿Todo listo?

To close this season, we’ll listen in on María, from Perú, and Carmela, from Spain. Remember their last conversation when they were trying to find some time to meet up? Well, they finally made it, and they’re meeting at a new Colombian restaurant! ¡Escuchemos!

María: ¡ Hola, Carmela! Perdón, estoy tarde.

Carmela: ¡Hola! No te preocupes, yo acabo de llegar. ¿Qué tal? ¡Cuánto tiempo!

María: Hace tiempo que no nos vemos, ¿no?

Carmela: Ya.

María: Pero mira, este restaurante se ve bien bueno.

Carmela: Pues, me hablaron muy bien de él. Es un nuevo restaurante colombiano que ha abierto hace poco y tenía muchas ganas de probarlo.

María: ¿Ah, sí? ¿Tienes alguna recomendación?

Carmela: Pues, bueno, la que me dijo mi amigo no es muy buena para ti… La recomendación de mi amigo es la arepa de pollo.

María: A ver, no, no es buena para una vegetariana como yo. Pero hay que preguntar a ver si hay algo.

Carmela: Sí, creo que tienen bastantes opciones vegetarianas.

Camarera: ¡Hola! ¿Están listas para pedir?

Carmela: Ehm, casi. Una pregunta: ¿qué opciones vegetarianas tiene?

Camarera: Sí, claro. Tenemos arepa de queso, también tenemos pan de bono, o patacones…

María: ¿Patacones? ¿Qué son esos?

Camarera: Ah, mira, son plátanos verdes, pero fritos.

Carmela: Ah, suena bien.

María: Suena rico.

Carmela: ¿Compartimos una de patacones?

María: Sí, buena idea.

Carmela: Vale.

María: Bueno, una orden de patacones y una arepa de queso para mí, por favor.

Camarera: Vale. ¿Y para la señorita?

Carmela: Ehm, para mí la arepa de pollo, por favor.

Camarera: Okay. ¿Y desean beber algo?

Carmela: Sí. ¿Qué cositas frescas tiene? ¿Qué zumos tiene?

Camarera: Les recomiendo mucho el jugo de piña.

Carmela: Ay, yo es que soy alérgica. ¿Qué otros hay?

Camarera: Ay, no importa. Bueno. Tenemos limonada, o tenemos jugo de lulo…

Carmela: Ah, ¿y qué es el lulo?

Camarera: El lulo es una fruta colombiana ácida que es parecida con la naranja.

Carmela: Vale, pues para mí un jugo de lulo.

Camarera: Okay.

María: Para mí también. Suena rico.

Camarera: Vale.

Carmela: Y una pregunta: ¿podemos pagar con tarjeta?

Camarera: Ay, no, solo con efectivo.

Carmela: Vale. No, no se preocupe, está bien.

María: Ay, no, pero Carmela no traje efectivo conmigo.

Carmela: Ah, bueno, yo creo que tengo suficiente. Te puedo invitar esta vez.

María: Ay, gracias.

Blake: ¿Qué tal? How did it go? Perhaps you already caught a bit of what they talked about. Let’s have a closer look!

So, María and Carmela are at a Colombian restaurant, one that a friend recommended to Carmela. And “la arepa de pollo”, the chicken arepa, was also recommended to her. In case you don’t know, arepas are flat, round, unleavened patties made of corn flour, usually stuffed with a filling. And they’re very common in Colombia and Venezuela. However, is this something that María would like? Actually, no… “María es vegetariana”, a vegetarian.

Then the server comes, and what does she ask them? “¿Están listas para pedir?” Are you ready to order? And, yes, “casi”, almost, they just need to know what “opciones vegetarianas” there are.

The server starts listing a few: “arepa de queso”, cheese arepa, “pan de bono”, a type of Colombian bread made with cassava starch and cheese, and “patacones”… “¿Qué son los patacones?” What are patacones?… Did you hear? “Son plátanos verdes fritos”, they are fried green bananas. So the two friends decide to share an order. Did you hear how they ask this to each other? “¿Compartimos una de patacones?” Shall we share an order of patacones? And then they also order a couple arepas.

And what about drinks, “¿Desean beber algo?” Would they like something to drink? Carmela asks the server what type of juices she has. Did you hear that the server and Carmela use a different word? Carmela first uses the word “zumo”, because she speaks European Spanish, and the server uses the word “jugo”, as this is the most common word in Latin America. But going back to the dialogue, there are different options: “jugo de piña”, pineapple juice, “limonadas”, lemonades, and “jugo de lulo”. Carmela doesn’t want the first one, did you hear why? She says “soy alérgica”, I’m allergic to pineapple. However, the “jugo de lulo”, the juice of an acidic fruit with a taste similar to orange, is what the two friends decide to go for.

And Carmela asks the server one last question. Did you hear what it is? “¿Podemos pagar con tarjeta?” Can we pay with card? And how does the server respond? “No, solo efectivo.” No, only cash. And since María has no cash on her, Carmela invites her to lunch. Her treat this time!
 But now let’s hear the dialogue one more time!

María: ¡ Hola, Carmela! Perdón, estoy tarde.

Carmela: ¡Hola! No te preocupes, yo acabo de llegar. ¿Qué tal? ¡Cuánto tiempo!
