You’ll hear a dialogue in Spanish twice. During the first listen try to get used to how the conversation flows and the sounds of Spanish. Then I’ll break down some of the key vocabulary and expressions for you. And after that you’ll hear the conversation a second time! As you already know, you don’t need to understand everything on the second listen, but try to catch those new words!

You’re going to hear Paula and Fernando, two colleagues from Spain, talk about what they got up to over the weekend, so get ready to practice some past tenses! ¡Escuchemos!

Fernando: ¡Uf! Esta reunión ha sido horrible. No me he enterado de nada.

Paula: ¿Y eso?

Fernando: Estoy muy cansado hoy.

Paula: ¿Por qué?

Fernando: No paré en todo el fin de semana…

Paula: ¡Ah! ¿Y qué hiciste?

Fernando: Hice un montón de cosas. Por ejemplo, el sábado fui al cumpleaños de una amiga y fuimos a cenar a un restaurante. Y la comida estaba muy buena. Y…

Paula: ¿Qué tipo de restaurante era?

Fernando: Era un restaurante vietnamita.

Paula: ¡Ah! ¿Me lo recomiendas?

Fernando: Sí, luego te mando el nombre.

Paula: Ah, vale. ¡Genial!

Fernando: Y después, fuimos a una discoteca a bailar…

Paula: ¿A una discoteca?

Fernando: ¡Sí!

Paula: ¡Me siento muy vieja!

Fernando: Y sí, estuvimos bailando toda la noche.

Paula: ¡Ala! ¡Qué bien!

Fernando: Sí. Y al día siguiente fui a hacer senderismo con mi novia y sí, acabamos muy cansados también. ¿Y tú qué tal?

Paula: Pues yo… mi fin de semana, lo contrario que el tuyo.

Fernando: ¿Ah, sí?

Paula: Supertranquilo, sí. Estuve en casa prácticamente todo el fin de semana.

Fernando: ¡Qué bien!

Paula: Aproveché para leer. El sábado estuve leyendo toda la tarde y me acabé un libro que tenía pendiente. Y después, el domingo, pues vi un par de películas, estuve cocinando…

Fernando: ¿Sí?

Paula: Sí, no mucha cosa, pero muy relajada.

Fernando: ¡Qué bien!

Paula: Así que, sí, muy bien. Descansada.

Fernando: ¡Exacto! Oye, te dejo que tengo otra reunión. ¿Pero nos vemos luego?

Paula: Claro, ¡hasta luego!

Fernando: ¡Vale! ¡Hasta luego!

Blake: ¿Qué tal? How was the first listen? Let’s break down what they’ve talked about!

So Fernando had a rough time following a meeting because he had a very busy weekend! Did you hear how he says that? “No paré en todo el fin de semana”, I didn’t stop all weekend.

¿Y qué hizo? What did he do? He says that on Saturday “fui al cumpleaños de una amiga”, I went to a friend’s birthday. And how did they celebrate it? Fernando says, “fuimos a cenar a un restaurante”, we went for dinner at a restaurant. By the way, did you hear what type of restaurant it was? “Un restaurante vietnamita”, a Vietnamese restaurant. After that, he says “fuimos a una discoteca”, we went to a nightclub.

¿Y el domingo? And Sunday? What did he do? Fernando tells Paula, “fui a hacer senderismo”, I went hiking. Wow, after a night out! No wonder they ended up “muy cansados”, very tired! That is a nonstop weekend!

What about Paula? Was she as busy as Fernando? No, her weekend was the complete opposite, it was “supertranquilo”. Did you hear what she did? She says that on Saturday, “estuve leyendo todo el día”, I was reading the whole day. And on Sunday, “vi un par de películas, estuve cocinando…”, I watched a couple of movies, I was cooking… So yeah, a very relaxing weekend!

But they will continue chatting later, as Fernando has another meeting to run to. In the meantime, let's listen to the conversation a second time! Ready? ¡Vamos!
