Blake: ¡Hola de nuevo! We’re back with more real-life conversations, so get ready for a new episode of Eavesdrop en español!

You probably already know the drill, but let me go through it one more time for those who might be new to this podcast! In every episode you’ll hear a conversation twice. During the first listen, sit back and relax while you get used to its flow and how Spanish sounds. Then, I’ll explain some of the key words and expressions and after that you’ll hear it the second time. You don’t need to understand everything on the second listen, just try to catch the new vocabulary in Spanish, and see if you can understand the general meaning.

Before we start, I have a small tip for you! You can slow down the audio in your podcast player. Why not give it a try first at a slower pace and then at its natural cadence?

Bueno, ¡empecemos!

Do you remember Claudia? She’s talking today with another friend from México, Allan. They are discussing what her boyfriend likes and dislikes as his birthday is coming soon! ¡Escuchemos!

Allan: ¿Te gustaría ir la semana que viene conmigo y con Carmela a hacer escalada y cervezas?

Claudia: ¡Guau! Se escucha muy padre, pero la verdad es que no me gusta la escalada, aunque las cervezas sí.

Allan: Hum… Pues, podríamos tomar algo sin hacer la escalada.

Claudia: Ah, podría ser. Es solo que es el cumpleaños de mi novio y aún no sé qué regalarle.

Allan: ¡Ah, es muy fácil! A Félix le encanta el fútbol. Podrían ir a ver un partido.

Claudia: ¡Ay, no! Pero yo odio el fútbol.

Allan: A mí tampoco me gusta, la verdad. Y, ¿qué tal si hacen algo diferente? Como, por ejemplo… no sé, se me ocurre ir a jugar juegos… ¿Sabes qué estaría muy bien? No sé si a él le gusta tanto, un escape room.

Claudia: ¡Ay, estaría muy padre! ¿Tienes alguna idea?

Allan: ¿De qué tipo te gustarían más?

Claudia: Pues a mí me encanta todo lo que tiene que ver con misterio y detectives, entonces podríamos hacer algo como eso.

Allan: ¿Y de terror no te gustan?

Claudia: No, la verdad es que no.

Allan: ¿No? Pero si es lo mejor. Es así como mucho sentimiento, muchos nervios…

Claudia: No, me choca. Me estresa demasiado.

Allan: Vale. Entonces vamos por algo más tranquilo, entonces. ¿De misterio dijiste?

Claudia: Sí.

Allan: Pues hay uno muy bueno. De hecho, no está lejos de tu casa.

Claudia: ¡Ah, perfecto! ¿Me ayudas a organizarlo, entonces?

Allan: ¡Sí! ¿Preferirías si vamos juntos o mejor tú y él solos?

Claudia: ¡Juntos!

Allan: ¡Ah, mira mejor! ¡Qué bien!

Claudia: ¡Muy bien!

Allan: ¿Qué día querías ir la semana que viene?

Claudia: El sábado.

Allan:  ¿El sábado? ¡Vale! ¡Perfecto!

Blake: ¿Y? ¿Cómo fue? Were you able to get the flow of the conversation? Let’s see what those two talked about!

So first Allan is asking about a possible plan next week, but Claudia doesn't have so much time. Did you hear why? She says “es el cumpleaños de mi novio”, it’s my boyfriend’s birthday, and on top of that she doesn’t know what to “regalarle”, give him as a gift.

But Allan has some ideas… He knows that “a Félix le encanta el fútbol”, Félix loves soccer, so why not go to “un partido”, a match, together?

Is Claudia happy with that idea? No, she says “odio el fútbol”, I hate soccer. To which Allan replies that actually “a mí tampoco me gusta”, I don’t like it either.

Luckily, he has another idea: an escape room! In case you don’t know what that is, this is a game that takes place in a closed room, and you need to solve riddles and puzzles to be able to find a key to escape, or solve a mystery.

So then he asks Claudia what type of escape room she would like, and she says that she loves everything related to “misterio y detectives”. And what about the scary ones, “de terror”, does she like them? No, she says “me choca”, which is another way to say “I don’t like it” in México.

But this is not a problem, as Allan knows about a mystery escape room that isn't “lejos”, far from her house. He would like to help Claudia organize the event. So he asks her, “¿preferirías si vamos juntos o mejor tú y él solos?”, would you prefer if we go together or better you and him alone? And she wants to go “juntos”, together.

So finding a perfect birthday gift for her boyfriend wasn’t as difficult in the end.
