I’m Blake, your host, and I’ll guide you through this episode!

You’re going to listen twice to a Spanish conversation. The first time is for you to get used to the flow. After that, I’ll break down the most important parts of the dialogue for you, and then you’ll listen to it again! Remember that you don’t need to understand everything on the first or second go, but instead slowly get more familiar with the vocabulary and how Spanish sounds.

Before we start, let me give you a small tip! You can adjust the speed of the audio in your podcast player. Why not listen to the conversation at a slower pace first, and then at its natural pace the second time around?

¿Todo listo? ¡Pues empecemos!

Today you’ll hear two Spanish speakers from Colombia, Luis and Alejandro, talk about their jobs while at a party. Let’s see if you can hear what they do!

Luis: ¡Alejandro! ¡Alejandro!

Alejandro: ¡Ey, Luis! ¡Hola! ¡Tiempo sin verte!

Luis: Yo sé. ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo va todo?

Alejandro: Bien, estoy trabajando en la clínica veterinaria ahora.

Luis: ¡Ah, verdad! ¡Sí! ¿Y qué tal va eso?

Alejandro: Me gusta mucho, pero es un poco intenso. Tengo que trabajar en la mañana, o en la tarde, o en la noche. ¿Y tú? ¿Continúas en la tienda para mascotas?

Luis: Sí, sí. Lo mismo. O sea, tú sabes cómo es. Un poco aburrido, pero bien. En general, contento porque me da la flexibilidad de trabajar y estudiar a la vez.

Alejandro: Sí, sí recuerdo. Y aquí mi jefe me ayuda bastante con los horarios, pero toca trabajar todo el tiempo. ¿Qué estás estudiando, Luis? Que no recuerdo…

Luis: Estoy estudiando biología. Ya voy por el segundo año, o sea que me quedan dos.

Alejandro: Okey, ya vas por buen camino.

Luis: Sí, sí. De verdad que a veces no veo la hora de acabar, pero bueno… Y cuéntame, en el trabajo este en la clínica, ¿qué tal los compañeros?, ¿qué tal con el jefe?…

Alejandro: Los colegas… entre todos nos ayudamos cuando tenemos emergencias con algún animal. Y, no, la verdad me gusta mucho. Oye, ¿y qué tal María? Nuestra colega aquella que trabajaba con nosotros.

Luis: Ah, sí, María. ¿Qué te cuento? Ah, pues, imagínate, la ascendieron, entonces ella ahora pasó a ser supervisora de bodega, que era lo que quería.

Blake: ¿Y? ¿Cómo fue? Were you able to get used to the flow of the conversation? Remember that the first listen is all about getting used to how Spanish sounds.

But now, let’s break down what these two talked about! So did you hear where Alejandro is working now? “En la clínica veterinaria”, in the veterinarian clinic.

And how is that going? “¿Cómo va eso?”, it seems that he’s busy, as he has to work “o en la mañana, o en la tarde o en la noche”, so at any time of day!

What about Luis? Did you hear what he does for a living? He is still working “en la tienda para mascotas”, at the pet shop. And it’s not so bad. Despite it being a bit “aburrido”, boring, it gives him the flexibility “de trabajar y estudiar a la vez”, of working and studying at the same time.

Alejandro mentions that he remembers this flexibility at “la tienda para mascotas” from when they used to work there together, and adds that for him now at the vet clinic the good thing is that his “jefe”, boss, helps him out with “los horarios”, the schedule.

But going back to Luis, did you catch what he’s studying? “Biología”, biology. He’s already in his second year, and he says “no veo la hora de acabar”, I can’t wait to finish.

And Luis wants to know more about Alejandro’s new job, so he asks him about his new colleagues, and the boss. Alejandro shares that his colleagues seem to be quite nice, and they all help each other, “todos nos ayudamos”. By the way, did you catch that they use different words for colleagues? Luis says “compañeros” and Alejandro says “colegas”. Both words can be used in this context.

Then they continue chatting about an old colleague from “la tienda para mascotas”, María, who was promoted, “la ascendieron”, and now she’s “supervisora de bodega”, store supervisor.

And it seems that their chat about the old times in “la tienda para mascotas” will continue for a bit, but it’s time for us to listen again to the dialogue!

Luis: ¡Alejandro! ¡Alejandro!

Alejandro: ¡Ey, Luis! ¡Hola! ¡Tiempo sin verte!
