Blake: Ready for more real life conversations in Spanish? Estamos de vuelta with a new episode of Eavesdrop en español! And for those who don’t know me yet, soy Blake, your host!

You’re going to listen to a Spanish conversation… twice! On the first go you can relax and get used to how Spanish sounds and the flow of the conversation. You might even understand more than what you expect! After that, I’ll explain some parts of the conversation, and then you’ll hear it again. But, before we start, let me give you a small tip! If you want, you can read along with the transcript found in the episode description while you listen. Otherwise, for a little challenge, why not listen to the conversation without the transcript on the first go?

Today you’ll hear Claudia and Norberto, two Spanish speakers from México who haven’t seen each other for a while. They quickly catch up and talk about Norberto’s family visit. Let’s see if you can hear what he says about his family!

Claudia: ¡Ey! ¡Hola, Norberto! ¿Cómo has estado? ¡Qué gusto verte!

Norberto: ¡Hola, Claudia! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo estás?

Claudia: ¡Muy bien! Tiene mucho que no te veo. ¿En dónde estabas?

Norberto: Pues andaba de viaje.

Claudia: ¿De verdad? ¿A dónde fuiste?

Norberto: A México, a ver a mi familia.

Claudia: ¡Qué padre! ¿Con quién fuiste?

Norberto: Con mi pareja, porque tenía que presentarlos. Por cierto, mira, tengo una foto de mi familia.

Claudia: A ver…

Norberto: Pues mira…

Claudia: ¡Guau! Es una familia muy, muy grande.

Norberto: Así es.

Claudia: ¿Quién es la señora de blanco? Muy elegante.

Norberto: Esa señora es mi madre.

Claudia: ¡Oh! Se parecen mucho.

Norberto: Eso es cierto, eso nos han dicho.

Claudia: ¿Y la chica de al lado?

Norberto: Es mi sobrina. Y ella estudia en la universidad.

Claudia: Es muy bonita. ¿Pero quiénes son los de atrás? Están muy altos.

Norberto: Pues aquellos son mis hermanos y se parecen más a mi padre.

Claudia: Así es, ya veo. ¿Y a qué se dedica tu hermano de la izquierda? Se ve muy elegante también.

Norberto: Él es hombre de negocios y le gusta mucho como vestirse.

Claudia: Ya veo. ¿Y quién es la chica rubia?

Norberto: Esa es mi pareja.

Claudia: ¡Guau! Es muy bonita también. ¿Y qué más hicieron en México?

Norberto: Pues andamos de paseo, un poco por la playa, visitando algunos pueblos…

Claudia: Sí, puedo ver, vienes muy bronceado.

Norberto: ¡Ya me hacía falta!

Claudia: Bueno, te tengo que dejar porque mi tren está a punto de irse, pero me dio mucho gusto verte.

Norberto: Bueno, nos vemos después y hablamos con calma.

Claudia: Así es. Nos podemos tomar un café.

Norberto: Perfecto.

Claudia: ¡Chao!

Norberto: ¡Chao!

Blake: ¿Qué tal? How did it go? Remember that the first listen was just meant to get you familiar with how Spanish sounds and the flow of the conversation. But now, let’s dive into what Claudia and Norberto were talking about!

So, did you catch where Norberto traveled to? Sí, México, to visit his family. 
 
And you probably heard Claudia saying “¡Qué padre!”, but they’re not talking about Norberto’s father just yet! “¡Qué padre!” is an expression used in México to say that something is cool.

Going back to the conversation, did you catch who Norberto was traveling with? He says “con mi pareja”, with my partner, because, on this trip, he wants his family and partner to meet each other.

Norberto shows a picture of his family, and they speak about some of the people in it.

First they talk about Norberto’s “madre”, mother. She is “muy elegante”, and apparently mother and son look very much alike, “se parecen mucho”.

And next to her is Norberto’s “sobrina”, niece. Did you catch what she does? “Ella estudia en la universidad”, she studies in the university.

Then they speak about his “hermanos”, brothers. They are all “muy altos”, very tall, like his “padre”. And what does he say about one of his “hermanos”? “Es un hombre de negocios”, a businessman. That’s why he looks so “elegante” as well!

And finally, Claudia asks “¿Y quién es la chica rubia?”, who is the blond girl? He says “mi pareja”, my partner. And Claudia describes her as “muy bonita”, very pretty!

And they were not just visiting family while in México, but also went for walks and to the beach, and visited some villages. That’s why Norberto is so “bronceado”, so tan after his trip!

But they decide to continue talking another day, as Claudia’s train is “a punto de irse”, about to leave!

Okay, now that you’ve listened to the conversation once and gotten a little help with some of the vocabulary, let’s go for the second listen!

Claudia: ¡Ey! ¡Hola, Norberto! ¿Cómo has estado? ¡Qué gusto verte!

Norberto: ¡Hola, Claudia! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo estás?

Claudia: ¡Muy bien! Tiene mucho que no te veo. ¿En dónde estabas?

Norberto: Pues andaba de viaje.
