In each episode, you’ll listen to a Spanish conversation … twice. On the first go, just try to get used to the rhythm of the language. Maybe you’ll even surprise yourself with how much you understand! After that, I’ll explain some of the most important words and expressions from the conversation, and then you’ll hear it one more time. Today you’ll hear a conversation between Ester and Dani, two coworkers from Spain. See if you can figure out what the plan is, and, most importantly, whether Dani is interested!

Ester: Dani, ¿tienes un momento?

Dani: Sí, dime.

Ester: Me han dicho que te gusta mucho ir al cine.

Dani: A mí sí. Me encanta el cine. ¿Por qué?

Ester: Bueno, no, si yo te pregunto. ¿Qué tipo de películas te gustan?

Dani: Pues me gusta todo tipo de películas, casi todo tipo de películas, pero sobre todo drama, acción, comedia… ¿Por qué?

Ester: Ehm, ¿y los musicales?

Dani: No soy muy fan de los musicales…

Ester: No, no me digas que no.

Dani: No me gustan mucho…

Ester: Ay… Pues justo te iba a decir que tengo una entrada para este fin de semana, que ya sabes que hay ese festival del cine aquí. ¡Pero es para un musical!

Dani: ¿Y solo tienes entradas para el musical?

Ester: Sí.

Dani: Vaya…

Ester: ¡Pero es gratis!

Dani: ¿Qué día es?

Ester: El sábado.

Dani: ¿A qué hora?

Ester: A las cinco.

Dani: Sábado a las cinco… un musical…

Ester: Venga, va, no me digas que no.

Dani: Bueno, venga, voy. Me apunto.

Ester: Bueno, ya puedes seguir trabajando.

Dani: Vale, hablamos luego.

Blake: ¿Y? ¿Cómo fue? How did it go? Remember that this first listen was just meant to get you used to the sound of Spanish. Now, let’s break the conversation down and see what Ester and Dani were chatting about!

So, did you catch what Ester asks Dani to do on the weekend? “Sí, ir al cine”, to go to the cinema.

And that’s why she asks Dani what type of “películas”, films, he likes. He says “todo tipo”, all kinds of movies. Especially “drama, acción, comedia.”

But… there is one genre that he’s not that into… Did you hear which one? “Los musicales”, musicals. He uses the expression “no soy muy fan de los musicales”, I’m not much of a fan of musicals.

Unfortunately, Ester has two tickets for just that. By the way, did you catch how she says tickets? “Entradas”. You’ll probably also hear “tickets” or “boletos” depending on the variety of Spanish spoken.

And what happens in the end? Does Dani want to go to the movies with Ester? Sí, he agrees… I wonder if the fact that the tickets are “gratis”, free, had anything to do with his change of heart…

By the way, when is the “película”, the movie? “El sábado”, Saturday. And at what time? “¿A qué hora?” “A las cinco”, at five! “La película es el sábado a las cinco”.

Oh, and one last thing, Dani uses a very handy expression to say that he’s in, “me apunto”, which literally means “I put my name down”, in this case, for the plan.

Now that you’ve listened to the conversation once and gotten a little help with some of the vocabulary, let’s listen to it again!
