Narrator: Hola otra vez. ¡Vamos a resolver el misterio! As the train pulled into its final destination, Romero implored you to quickly decide who the “culpable” is. Based on all the clues you’ve uncovered, it seems clear to you that Claudia committed the crime. You have to make sure she can’t escape!

You lunge and grab her, holding her in place.

Claudia: No, no, no, no. ¡Esto es un error!

Martina: ¡Lo sabía, lo sabía! Claudia, ¿cómo has hecho algo así?

Guillermo: ¡No! ¡No ha sido Claudia!

Claudia: ¡Yo no he secuestrado al gato! 
Inspector, por favor…

Guillermo: ¡Claudia es una verdadera amante de los animales! ¡Y muy alérgica a los gatos! ¿Cómo va a secuestrar a un gato?

Martina: Claro que ha sido ella… ¿Verdadera amante de los animales? ¡Ja! De todos los animales excepto de mi gato…

Claudia: ¡Yo no quiero hacer daño a ningún animal! ¡Inspector, por favor, escúcheme!

Narrator: So, you’ve accused Claudia, but do both Guillermo and Martina also think she’s guilty?

¡No! Guillermo reminds you that she’s a real animal lover, and on top of that she’s very allergic to cats, so, according to him, she couldn’t have kidnapped Misifús. Martina, on the other hand, agrees with you. She scoffs as Guillermo says Claudia’s an animal lover, saying she loves all animals except Misifús. Claudia pleads with Romero to listen to her, but he simply reaches into his pocket and pulls out your notebook.

Romero: Lo siento, Claudia. En las notas de mi ayudante está claro que usted es la culpable.

Claudia: No… de verdad. No he sido yo.

Guillermo: ¡Estoy seguro de que Claudia es inocente! ¡Ha sido Martina! ¡Ella quiere el dinero del seguro!

Martina: ¿Pero qué dice?

Claudia: ¡Es verdad! ¡Inspector, escuche a Guillermo! ¡Martina necesita el dinero para pagar las deudas! ¡21.200 dólares es mucho dinero!

Romero: No, no, no. Está claro que Claudia es la culpable, ¿verdad, ayudante? En las notas dice que… ¿Dónde estaba? Ah, sí. Dice que si Misifús no participa en el concurso, Toby será el ganador… Y usted y Martina del Río no se… ehm… no se… no se “entienden bien”.

Claudia: ¡Pero es absurdo!

Romero: ¡En absoluto! Usted dijo que este año es la última oportunidad de Toby de ser el ganador. Si secuestra a Misifús, Toby ya no tiene rival. Y usted también puede hacerle daño a la señora del Río, si ella pierde a su gato. Además, el premio del concurso son 5.000 dólares.

Martina: Claudia, ¡eso es horrible!

Narrator: Romero lays out all the evidence against Claudia from your notes. It’s in her interest to make sure Misifús can’t participate in “el concurso”. He’s Toby’s only real rival, and with him out of the way, Toby is sure to win the $5,000 prize. It is their “última oportunidad”, after all. The inspector also points out the bad blood between Claudia and Martina, and claims that on top of ensuring Toby’s win, kidnapping Misifús was a way to hurt Martina. But, it seems like Claudia has more to say in her defense…

Claudia: ¡Inspector! Yo no quiero hacerle daño a ningún animal ni secuestrar a ningún animal. Yo sé cuánto se sufre si secuestran a tu mascota…

Romero: ¿Qué quiere decir?

Claudia: Cuando yo era pequeña tenía otro perrito… Se llamaba Coco. Era un perro muy bueno, obediente y muy bonito. Pero un día alguien se lo llevó. Lo secuestraron… y nunca más lo volvimos a ver. Fue algo muy triste para toda nuestra familia.

Narrator: Hmmm… interesting. Did you hear what happened to Claudia when she was little?

¡Si! She had another dog named Coco. A very good, obedient, and beautiful dog, but one day, somebody kidnapped him, “lo secuestraron”, and she never saw him again. You can hear her struggling to hold back tears as she tells you this.

Martina: Está mintiendo.

Claudia: ¡Es verdad! ¡Miren!

Narrator: Did you hear how Martina responds?

Right! She says “¡Está mintiendo!”, “She’s lying!”. Claudia takes out her phone and pulls up an article about the incident, complete with a photo of herself as a kid, holding Coco.

Martina: “Secuestran al perro de la familia García.” Anda, y aquí hay una foto de Claudia de pequeña… Entonces… es verdad…

Romero: Déjeme ver… Oh, pues sí… es verdad.

Claudia: Por eso, Inspector, yo no puedo secuestrar a la mascota de nadie… porque sé lo que se siente. Ya le dije: soy una verdadera amante de los animales.

Narrator: Claudia claims that she would never kidnap someone’s pet, since she knows how it feels. The emotion in her voice and the expression on her face make you start to doubt your decision. It just doesn’t add up.

Guillermo: Inspector, Claudia no puede ser la culpable. ¡Estoy seguro de que es Martina!

Claudia: ¡Sí! ¡Es ella! ¡Martina es la culpable!

Martina: ¡No! Yo jamás…

Romero: ¡Por favor, calma! Entiendo que la historia de Coco fue algo muy triste… pero todas las pistas y las notas dicen que usted es la culpable. Nuestro trabajo aquí ha terminado. Claudia, vamos a llevarla a la policía.

Narrator: So, Claudia is starting to convince you, but what about Romero? Has he changed his mind?

¡No! While he understands that the story about Coco is very sad, the “pistas y las notas” say she’s guilty. And with that, he says your work here is done and that you’re going to take Claudia to the police, “vamos a llevarla a la policía”.

Claudia: Pero… no. Yo no he hecho nada…

Guillermo: ¡Esperen! ¡Esperen! ¡Su trabajo no ha terminado!

Romero: ¿Cómo que no?

Guillermo: ¡No! ¿Y el gato? ¿En dónde está? ¿eh?

Martina: ¡Exacto! ¡¿Claudia, dónde está mi gato?!

Romero: Humm… Pues… el gato no sabemos dónde… dónde está… ¡Ah! ¡Vamos al vagón de segunda clase! ¡Seguro que hay más pistas en el asiento de Claudia!

Guillermo: Muy bien. Pero… no va a encontrar nada.

Narrator: Romero is about to take Claudia away when Guillermo speaks up. He insists that your work here isn’t finished. And why is that?

¡Exacto! “¿Dónde está el gato?” You still haven’t found the cat! Romero’s caught a bit off guard, but after thinking for a moment, he comes up with an idea. He says “¡Vamos al vagón de segunda clase!” To do what?

Right! To look for more “pistas” around Claudia’s “asiento”.

Romero: Muy bien. Ayudante, registra el asiento y el equipaje de Claudia.

Narrator: Romero asks you to “registrar”, or search Claudia’s seat and luggage. You search everything, but only find a bag of dog food, a couple of squeaky toys, and a magazine about animal rights. No cat hair, no tuna cans… You and the inspector exchange a puzzled look.

Romero: No hay pistas… ¿Entonces…?

Guillermo: ¿Lo ve? ¡Claudia es inocente!

Claudia: De verdad, Inspector, yo soy inocente.

Martina: Pero si no ha sido ella, ¿entonces quién?… ¿Y dónde está mi gato? ¡Inspector, diga algo!

Narrator: Romero is lost in thought, trying to figure out what’s going on. You were both so sure that Claudia was the culprit, but without any new clues, and no sign of Misifús, it’s becoming obvious that she really didn’t do it. Just then, you hear the door at the end of the car open…

And there, in all his glory, is Misifús!

Martina: ¡Misifús! ¡Gatito bonito! ¡Ven, ven!

Romero: ¿Ese es Misifús?

Claudia: Sí… 

Guillermo: ¿Pero qué hace este gato aquí?… Quiero decir… ¡El gato!… ¡Ya han encontrado al gato!

Romero: ¡Excelente! ¿Pero entonces… quién ha sido? ¿Quién ha secuestrado a Misifús?

Narrator: Well, I guess half of your work is done. You’ve found Misifús, but you still have no idea who took him!

Martina: ¡Gatito bonito! ¡Ven aquí!

¿A dónde vas? ¡Misifús, vuelve aquí!

Narrator: Martina runs towards her cat, but he has other plans. With a flick of his tail, he bolts out the door and onto the platform. Martina, shouting, races after him. You and Romero run to catch up.

Martina: ¡Misifús!

Romero: ¡Espere!

Martina: ¡Misifús! ¡Misifús!

Romero: ¿Dónde está?

Martina: ¡No lo sé! ¡Mi gato ha desaparecido! ¡Se ha ido! Romero, usted es el peor detective del mundo. No puede resolver un caso solo y no puede resolver un caso con ayuda…

Romero: ¡Oh, no! Otra vez no…

Narrator: You catch up to Martina, and, out of breath, she tells you that Misifús has disappeared. She turns on Romero calling him the worst detective in the world , “el peor detective del mundo”. He can’t solve a case by himself, and he can’t solve a case with help, she says. The inspector hangs his head, clearly distraught that he’s failed yet again. You’re pretty sure his reputation will never recover after this. You put a hand on his shoulder to console him, but you can’t stop thinking about the cat. Where did he go?

Narrator: A few hours later, the sun high in the sky, a farmer sits in front of her house, taking a break from her work. She’s just about to doze off when she hears a rustle in the bushes…

Farmer: ¡Oh! Y tú, gatito, ¿qué haces acá?

Farmer: ¿Tienes hambre? Tengo un poquito de atún…

Narrator: Well, I guess Misifús has had enough of the limelight for one life. Now, here on this small farm nestled in the mountains, he can live out the rest of his days in peace. No more photo shoots or interviews, no more contests or advertisements, and most importantly, all the tuna he could ever want.

Ayudante, you may not have been able to solve the case and find the catnapper, but don’t beat yourself up about it! You managed to navigate a mystery almost entirely in Spanish, and for that you should be proud!
