Narrator: Hola otra vez. ¡Vamos a resolver el misterio! As the train pulled into its final destination, Romero implored you to quickly decide who the “culpable” is before they could escape. With your notebook open in front of you, the “pistas” paint a clear picture. You flip the book closed, raise your eyes, and point a finger directly at the culprit… Guillermo.

Guillermo: ¿Qué? ¡¿Yo?!

Martina: ¿Guillermo? ¡Inspector, este hombre es inocente!

Claudia: ¡Sí! ¡Él es inocente! ¡Ha sido Martina!

Martina: ¡No! ¡Ha sido Claudia!

Claudia: ¡Yo no he sido!

Romero: Calma, calma.

Martina: ¡Está claro que ha sido Claudia! ¡Romero, usted es el peor detective del mundo!

Romero: ¡Señora del Río! ¿Cómo se atreve?

Narrator: So, you’re positive that Guillermo is the catnapper, but do Martina and Claudia agree? 

No! They don’t buy it. They still seem to suspect each other, and both insist on Guillermo’s innocence.

Narrator: As the two women go back and forth about who’s really to blame, Guillermo suddenly makes a break for it, knocking over some chairs and sending dishes crashing to the floor in his rush to escape.

Claudia: ¡Oh!

Romero: ¡Alto! ¡Pare! ¡Ayudante, atrápalo! ¡Vamos! ¡Corre!

Martina: Pero…

Claudia: No puede ser…

Narrator: You run after Guillermo followed by Romero, Martina, and Claudia. Luckily the station is bustling with passengers unloading their luggage and greeting friends and family. In the press of people, Guillermo only gets about ten paces from the train before you catch up to him and tackle him to the ground.

Romero: Guillermo… Uf… Guillermo… Yo lo acuso del secuestro de Misifús.

Claudia: ¿Es cierto? ¿Has sido tú?

Martina: Pero… ¿por qué?

Guillermo: Yo… no quería hacer daño al gato, de verdad… Solo quería… justicia.

Claudia: ¿Cómo?

Martina: ¿Justicia?

Romero: ¡Entonces lo admite! ¡Usted es el culpable! ¡Excelente trabajo, ayudante!

Narrator: Way to go! You solved the case! Romero, beaming, congratulates you on your “excelente trabajo”. Guillermo fesses up, but claims he wasn’t going to hurt the cat, and that he just wanted… what did he say?

Exacto. “Solo quería justicia.” He just wanted justice. But justice for what?

Claudia: Pero no entiendo…

Martina: ¡Ni yo! ¿¡Justicia…?!

Romero: En las notas de mi ayudante está claro que Guillermo es muy sospechoso. Él no tenía un motivo claro para secuestrar a Misifús, pero no fue sincero en varias ocasiones.

Claudia: ¿En qué ocasiones? 

Romero: Guillermo mintió en diferentes ocasiones. ¿Verdad, ayudante? Aquí en tus notas… ¿Dónde estaba?… ¡Ah, sí! Dijo que no tenía muchos clientes por las noches, pero también dijo que era difícil recordar a todos los clientes… Y estaba claro que él sí recordaba de quién era el recibo de vino: ¡de Claudia! También dijo no recordar de quién era el número de teléfono en el recibo…

Guillermo: No quería que ustedes culparan a Claudia…

Claudia: Oh…Gracias.

Romero: Cuando Guillermo secuestró a Misifús en el compartimento de Martina, usó una lata de atún del vagón restaurante para atraer al gato. Además, en ese momento, perdió el recibo con el número de teléfono de Claudia. Y dejó una nota con manchas marrones… ¡de café!

Martina: ¡Pero Misifús no come atún!

Guillermo: ¡Ps! A Misifús le encanta el atún. ¿Qué?¿No conoce a su gato?

Martina: ¡Aah!

Claudia: No lo puedo creer…

Narrator: Romero recounts everything from your notes about Guillermo, making it clear that he has indeed been very “sospechoso”, dishonest, and contradictory. The can of tuna and the receipt with the telephone number point to him. And the note with brown stains? Coffee. He must have spilled some on the note as he was writing it!

Romero: Y, además, también parece que a Guillermo no le gusta Martina. Él dijo que ella “siempre había sido la típica rica”.

Martina: ¡¿Siempre qué?!

Romero: Sí, esas fueron sus palabras exactas, ¿verdad, ayudante? También está en las notas: “SIEMPRE ha sido la típica rica”. “SIEMPRE”. Eso me hizo pensar que Guillermo y Martina se conocían…

Martina: Pero… no puede ser…

Guillermo: Sí. Es cierto. ¿Aún no me reconoce? ¿No se acuerda de mí, Martina?

Narrator: Even with all these “pistas”, and even though he’s already confessed, Martina and Claudia are still having trouble believing it. Recalling Guillermo’s previous comments about Martina having always, “siempre”, been the typical rich person, Romero asks again if they know each other. Guillermo admits it this time, he does know Martina. He pointedly asks her if she still doesn’t recognize him.

Romero: Guillermo, ¿puede decirnos… de qué se conocen?

Guillermo: Sí. Yo trabajaba para la familia del Río. Yo era… el cocinero de la familia… hasta que Martina me despidió.

Martina: Humm…¡Espere! ¡Ahora ya lo reconozco! ¡Guillermo! ¡Es usted!

Narrator: Everyone, including you and Romero, is floored by Guillermo’s revelation. And how did Guillermo say he and Martina know each other? 

Sí. He said, “Yo trabajaba para la familia del Río.”, “I worked for the del Río family”. Turns out he was the family’s cook, “el cocinero”, until Martina fired him. With all the pieces falling into place, Martina finally recognizes him. He goes on…

Guillermo: Después de años de servicio para la familia del Río, Martina nos despidió a todos… sin ninguna explicación… Todo fue tan rápido… Perdimos nuestros trabajos… ¡Fue una injusticia!

Martina: Yo… lo siento mucho, Guillermo… pero no tenía dinero para poder pagarles…

Guillermo: Usted era la responsable de sus trabajadores…

Martina: Sí… es cierto. De verdad que lo siento mucho.

Guillermo: Yo solo secuestré a Misifús porque quería pedir dinero para mis compañeros y compañeras de trabajo.

Romero: ¿Para sus compañeros y compañeras de trabajo?

Guillermo: Sí. Quería ayudar a sus familias… No quería hacer daño a Misifús. Mi plan era devolverle el gato a Martina después de tener el dinero. De verdad. ¡Yo también soy un verdadero amante de los animales! Misifús está sano y salvo en el vagón restaurante… comiendo atún.

Narrator: Now you understand Guillermo’s motive. He planned to share the ransom money from the catnapping with his old coworkers and their families. So, that’s what he meant when he was talking about “justicia”. He swears that he would have returned Misifús as soon as he had the money, and that the cat is “sano y salvo”, safe and sound. Did you hear where he is? And what he’s doing?

Right! He’s in “el vagón restaurante… comiendo atún.”, in the dining car eating tuna.

Claudia: Qué historia tan terrible… no tenía ni idea…

Romero: Muy bien. Ahora vamos a ir todos al vagón restaurante. Vamos a ver si Misifús está de verdad allá.

Narrator: The five of you turn and make your way back to the dining car to find Misifús.

Romero: Guillermo, muéstrenos dónde está el gato…

Guillermo: Está aquí.

Martina: ¡Misifús! ¡Aquí estás! ¿Pero cuántas latas de atún te has comido?

Narrator: Guillermo leads you all behind the counter. He bends down, unlocks a cupboard, and swings the door open. Sure enough, there’s Misifús, surrounded by soft blankets and empty cans of tuna. He doesn’t look as elegant as he did on the magazine cover – he’s clearly in a food coma from all the tuna – but otherwise seems quite happy.

Romero: Bien… esto resuelve el caso… Guillermo vamos a llevarlo a la policía.

Martina: ¡No! ¡Espere! ¡No quiero que llame a la policía!

Romero: ¿Qué ocurre?

Martina: La verdad es que Guillermo tiene razón.

Romero: ¿Qué?

Claudia: ¿Cómo? 

Martina: Yo era responsable de mis trabajadores y trabajadoras… Por eso… Guillermo, sé que no es mucho dinero, pero quiero darles a ustedes… el 20 % del dinero que gano con Misifús: el dinero de la televisión y revistas, los anuncios y el premio del concurso.

Narrator: Romero is just about to haul Guillermo off to the police, but Martina stops him. She doesn’t want him to call the police. She says that Guillermo is right, and that she was responsible for the workers, and for that reason, she offers Guillermo a percentage of the money she makes from Misifús. How much does she plan to give him?

¡Sí! “Veinte por ciento”, twenty percent. But… will Guillermo accept?

Guillermo: ¿Ahora quiere limpiar su conciencia? ¿Por qué no pensó en eso antes?

Martina: Por favor, Guillermo, acepte este dinero. Sé que esto no soluciona lo que pasó, pero quiero ayudar…

Guillermo: Muy bien. Pero… la próxima vez que vaya a la televisión o la entrevisten en una revista… quiero una disculpa pública.

Martina: Pero entonces… todo el mundo va a saber mi secreto.

Guillermo: Exacto. Pero eso es lo justo para sus trabajadores y trabajadoras… Saber la verdad.

Claudia: ¡Es cierto!

Martina: Sí, de acuerdo… tiene razón.

Narrator: Guillermo will accept, but on one condition. The next time Martina appears on TV or does an interview for a magazine, she’ll give “una disculpa pública”, a public apology. Martina hesitates, terrified of everyone finding out that she isn’t rich. But Guillermo tells her it’s only fair, and she reluctantly agrees.

Romero: Bueno, nuestro trabajo aquí ha terminado. Y por fin puedo disfrutar de mis vacaciones…

Martina: Muchas gracias, Inspector.

Claudia: ¿Aún tienes mi número?

Guillermo: Sí, ¿quieres que te llame algún día?

Narrator: Your work here seems to be done, so you and Inspector Romero excuse yourselves, collect your things from the second class car, and exit the train. Outside in the station, Romero turns to you…

Romero: Ayudante, estoy muy impresionado con tu trabajo.
¿Has pensado en ser detective? Igual nos volvemos a ver… en otra aventura…

Man from the crowd: ¡Socorro! ¡Ayuda!

Romero: Oh, oh…

Man from the crowd: ¡Usted! ¡Lo reconozco! ¡Es el famoso Inspector Romero! ¡Necesito su ayuda!

Romero: Oh, no… otra vez no…

Man from the crowd: ¡Por favor! ¡Solo usted puede ayudarme!

Romero: Bueno, ayudante, ¿puedes tomar notas para mí… otra vez?

Narrator: Perhaps I spoke too soon! It seems a good detective’s work is never done. With the case of the Catnapping on the Babbel Express in the bag, who knows what other “aventuras” lie in store for the two of you!

Narrator: Congratulations again on using your Spanish skills to solve “el misterio”! You should be more than proud of yourself for overcoming all the challenges in your way.
