Narrator: Hola otra vez. ¡Vamos a resolver el misterio! As the train pulled into its final destination, Romero implored you to quickly decide who the “culpable” is before they could escape. After reviewing all the information, you’ve determined that Martina is, in fact, the catnapper.

Train Announcement: Estimados pasajeros, hemos llegado a nuestra última parada. Por favor, dejen el tren y no se olviden de sus pertenencias. Gracias por viajar en el Babbel Express.

Narrator: A confused Martina stands there like a deer in the headlights as you run towards her and grab her, ensuring that she can’t make a break for it.

Martina: ¿Pero qué hace?

Qué horror!

Guillermo: ¡Lo sabía!

Martina: ¡Inspector! ¿Qué significa esto?

Romero: Señora del Río, la acuso a usted del secuestro de Misifús.

Claudia: Sí, lo estaba esperando…

Guillermo: ¡Ja!… ¡La típica rica! Siempre quieren más dinero…

Martina: ¿Pero qué dice?

Romero: Lo siento, Señora del Río, pero en las notas de mi ayudante está claro que usted es la culpable.

Martina: ¿Qué? ¿En las notas de su ayudante? ¡Las notas están mal!

Narrator: Romero tells Martina that he accuses her, “la acuso”, of kidnapping Misifús, her own cat. He explains that the notes you took throughout the investigation make it clear she’s guilty. Martina, maintaining her innocence, claims that “las notas están mal”. Do you know what that means?

Right! The notes are wrong.

Romero: No, no. En las notas está muy claro que usted es la culpable…

Martina: ¡Romero, usted es el peor detective del mundo!

Romero: ¡Señora del Río! ¡Un respeto, por favor!

Martina: ¡No puede resolver un crimen solo! ¡Y tampoco puede resolver un crimen con ayuda! ¡Yo soy inocente!

Romero: Muy bien. Y… ¿puede demostrar que es inocente?

Martina: ¡Por supuesto! ¿Por qué iba yo a secuestrar a mi gato? ¡Está claro que ha sido Claudia!

Claudia: ¡Eso no es cierto! 

Train announcement: Estimados pasajeros, hemos llegado a nuestra última parada. Por favor, abandonen el tren. 

Martina: ¡Ella quiere ganar el concurso! ¡Nosotras somos rivales!
¡Su perro y mi gato también!

Guillermo: ¡Claudia es una verdadera amante de los animales!

Narrator: In an outburst of frustration, Martina insults Romero. Did you hear what she called him? 

¡Exacto! “el peor detective del mundo”, the worst detective in the world. The inspector responds by asking if she can “demostrar”, or prove that she’s innocent. “¡Por supuesto!”, she replies, of course! According to her, it’s clear that Claudia kidnapped Misifús so her dog could win the contest. Is this her only defense? You glance at Romero, who’s never looked more sure of himself.

Romero: Calma, por favor. Señora del Río, usted ha secuestrado a su gato porque quiere los 21.200 dólares del seguro. Es evidente…

Martina: ¡Nooo! ¡Misifús es mi medio de vida!

Romero: Y usted necesita pagar las deudas de su padre.

Martina: Sí, pero…

Romero: ¡Y dijo que aún no ha pagado las deudas!

Martina: Pero Inspector… yo tengo suficiente dinero con Misifús: el premio del concurso, el dinero de las entrevistas y el dinero de los anuncios en los que está mi gato. Sin Misifús, yo no puedo pagar las deudas.

Romero: Pero… 21.200 dólares es mucho dinero…

Martina: Para tener el dinero del seguro… es necesario encontrar a mi gato… muerto.

Claudia: ¡Eso es verdad! Si no hay cuerpo… no hay dinero. ¡Ay, pobre gato!

Guillermo: ¿Ah, sí?

Narrator: Romero says it’s obvious Martina committed the crime. She needs the insurance money to pay off the debts she inherited from her father. She defends herself by explaining that she makes more money with Misifús. Can you remember the ways that Misifús earns her money? Which one of these is the odd one out: “el premio del concurso”, “las entrevistas”, “películas”, or “los anuncios”?

¡Sí! Misifús hasn’t appeared in any “películas”, or films… at least not yet! And that’s not all… in order to get the insurance money, Martina would need to find Misifús “muerto”, dead. Just like Claudia said, “Si no hay cuerpo… no hay dinero.”, “If there’s no body… there’s no money”.

Romero: Humm… Pero… si no es usted, ¿entonces quién?…

Claudia: ¡Yo no he sido! Pero… creo que Martina tampoco… 

Train announcement: Estimados pasajeros, hemos llegado a nuestra última parada. Por favor, abandonen el tren. 

Romero: Mi ayudante y yo hemos investigado y todo indica que Martina es la culpable. ¡Ahora vamos a llevarla a la policía!

Martina: ¡No! ¡Inspector, esto es un error!

Romero: Claudia, Guillermo, pueden irse.

Guillermo: Gracias, inspector.

Claudia: De acuerdo… Pero…

Romero: ¿Sí?

Martina: Está claro que ha sido Claudia, ¡llévela a ella a la policía!

Claudia: No, nada…

Narrator: Romero asks, “si no es usted, ¿entonces quién?”, “If it’s not you, then who?”, glancing over at you with a hint of doubt creeping into his confident demeanor. It seems like something isn’t sitting quite right with Claudia, either. And what do you think? Do you think you’ve made the right choice? Is Martina really “la culpable”? You turn to Inspector Romero, the look of doubt from before is gone, replaced again by a self-assured attitude. He doubles down and informs Martina you’re bringing her to “la policía”.

Romero: Bien. Señora del Río, vamos a llevarla a la policía.

Martina: De acuerdo… Pero antes quiero ir a mi compartimento. Quiero llevarme mis cosas.

Romero: Claro.

Narrator: Before taking her to the police, Martina asks if she can do something first. Did you catch what it is? 

¡Sí! She wants to get her things from her “compartimento”. Romero agrees, and the three of you make your way in that direction.

Narrator: But there’s a surprise waiting for you when you arrive.

Martina: ¡Ah! ¡Mire!

Romero: ¿Pero qué es eso?

Martina: ¡Es otra nota!

Romero: No, es una carta… “Para el peor detective del mundo y Martina del Río”…

Narrator: Hanging on the door is an envelope addressed to “el peor detective del mundo y Martina”. Romero takes it down, opens it, brushes some cat hair off of the letter inside, and reads it aloud.

Romero: “¡No volverán a ver a Misifús!”

Martina: ¡Nooo!

Narrator: There’s just one hastily written sentence scrawled across the paper: “¡No volverán a ver a Misifús!”. Can you guess what that means?

Yes. “You’ll never see Misifús again.” This confirms your doubts. Martina can’t be the catnapper…

Martina: ¡Se lo dije! ¡Yo no secuestré a mi gato!

Romero: ¡Rápido, ayudante! ¡Claudia y Guillermo aún están en la estación!

¡No los veo!… Entonces… la persona culpable ¡se ha escapado!

Martina: ¡Misifús! ¡Misifús!

Romero: ¡Oh, no! ¡Otra vez no! Se ha escapado.

Narrator: You and Romero race outside. The station is small but full of passengers exiting the train. You search desperately through the crowd for the other two suspects. One of them is clearly the culprit, but “se ha escapado”, he… or she… has escaped. Romero hangs his head, utterly defeated. You think back and remember that he also failed his last case, “The Guinea Pig Gazpacho”. It’s now clear to him that, with the addition of this fiasco, he’ll never work as a detective again.

So, you didn’t quite manage to solve the case, but don’t let that get you down! You managed to navigate a mystery almost entirely in Spanish, and for that you should be proud!

For now, if you feel like you need to review some of the “pistas”, you can head back to Chapter 4 and give it another listen.
