Narrator: Hola de nuevo. Following the sound of the barking dog, you and Inspector Romero leave Martina del Río’s compartment and make your way back to the second class car, hoping to uncover more “pistas“ about the catnapping. Make sure you pay attention! At the end of the episode, you’ll have to make another decision based on what you learn here.

You enter the car, and your gaze falls on the tiniest little chihuahua you’ve ever seen near the luggage rack. This is the dog that was making all that noise? Next to the very tiny dog, you notice a very tall woman trying to calm it down.

Romero: Disculpe, señora, ¿es este su perro?

Claudia: Sí. Este es mi perro. Se llama Toby. Yo soy Claudia.

Claudia: [sneeze]

Romero: ¡Oh! ¡Salud! Buenas noches, Claudia. Soy el Inspector Romero y aquí está mi ayudante. Estábamos en otro vagón y escuchamos ladrar a su perro. ¿Sabe por qué ladraba?

Narrator: After the introductions, Romero asks Claudia if she knows why her dog, Toby, was barking. “¿Sabe por qué ladraba?”.

Claudia: Lo siento mucho. Normalmente es muy tranquilo. Solo ladra a otros animales. Creo que estaba un poco nervioso, pero es un perro muy simpático, de verdad, y sabe hacer muchos trucos.

Narrator: Hmm… that’s interesting. Did you hear what Toby barks at? 

“Solo ladra a otros animales…”. Yup. He only barks at other animals. You note this down in your book.

Romero: ¡Salud, otra vez! ¿Sabe si había otro animal aquí?

Claudia: Humm, pues no lo sé. No he visto nada. Yo estaba durmiendo. ¿Por qué lo pregunta?

Romero: Estamos investigando un crimen…

Claudia: ¡Uff! ¿Crimen? ¿Habla usted de ese gato? 

Romero: ¿Conoce a Misifús? ¿Tiene algún problema con ese gato?

Narrator: It seems like Claudia has a real problem with Misifús. But why?

Claudia: Estoy haaaarta de ese gato. Siempre gana el concurso “La mejor mascota del mundo”. Sí, es muy elegante y puede hacer algunos trucos… pero… ¡mire a mi perro! ¿No cree que Toby puede ganar el concurso?

Romero: Pues me imagino que sí… ¡Espere! ¿El concurso? ¡Un momento! ¿Usted y Toby también van a participar en ese concurso de mascotas?

Claudia: Sí, por tercera vez… La última vez Toby no ganó… Misifús fue el ganador. Esta es nuestra última oportunidad.

Narrator: That’s it! Claudia is “harta”, fed up with Misifús. But did you get why? 

¡Exacto! “Él siempre gana el concurso”. He always wins the competition. She clearly thinks that Toby is the better pet, but seems worried that Misifús will beat him again, and this is their last chance, “la última oportunidad”.

Romero: Entonces… Toby es rival de Misifús en el concurso. Humm, sospechoso.

Claudia: Correcto.

Romero: Humm ¿Y por qué dice que esta es la última oportunidad?

Claudia: Participar es muy caro. ¡Martina del Río es rica! Por eso Misifús siempre participa y por eso ha ganado tantas veces.

Narrator: So, Toby and Misifús are rivals in “el concurso”. But did you get why this time is Claudia and Toby’s “última oportunidad”? 

Right, because “participar es muy caro”, participating is really expensive. So that’s why Misifús can always compete, because Martina del Río, “es rica”, is rich.

Romero: ¿Rica?

Claudia: ¡Sí! ¿Sabía que Misifús está asegurado por 21.200 dólares? 

Romero: ¡21.200 dólares! ¡Eso es mucho dinero!

Claudia: ¡Así es!

Romero: ¿Pero… usted cómo lo sabe?

Claudia: ¡Todo el mundo lo sabe! Está en todas las revistas. 

Narrator: Claudia said something about Misifús, but what was it exactly? “Está asegurado”, he’s insured… for “21.200 dólares”, 21,200 dollars! And how does she know this?

Well, apparently, “Está en todas las revistas.” It’s in all the magazines. You nudge the inspector.

Romero: ¿Qué pasa?… ¡Oh!… El gato está asegurado por 21.200 dólares… Humm.

Claudia: No sé qué me pasa. Solo soy alérgica a los gatos… Pero aquí no hay ninguno.

Narrator: Did you understand what Claudia said? “Soy alérgica a los gatos” She’s allergic to cats! You look at Romero, and then down at your clothes. Sure enough, the two of you are covered in cat hair from Martina del Río’s compartment. You point this out to the inspector.

Romero: ¡Ay, perdón! Es que hemos estado en el compartimento de la señora del Río. Es pelo de Misifús.

Claudia: Eso explica porqué estoy estornudando todo el tiempo. Si me disculpan, voy a regresar a mi asiento. 

Romero: Sí, claro. Lo entendemos.

Narrator: So that explains why she’s been sneezing, “estornudando”. To get away from the cat hair, she excuses herself and turns to go back to her seat, her “asiento”, but…

Claudia: ¿¡Pero quién ha puesto esto aquí!? ¡Qué asco!

Narrator: …she trips over something metal lying on the ground and falls down. You pick it up and show it to Romero…

Romero: Humm… sospechoso. Otra lata de atún. ¿De quién es?

Sam: ¡Uy! ¡Perdonen!

Narrator: Just then, another passenger sitting near you pipes up.

Sam: El atún fue mi cena. No era mi intención dejar la lata en el pasillo.

Narrator: She’s apologizing for leaving something in the walkway. And what was it? 

Right! “Una lata de atún”, a can of tuna! Hmmm…

Romero: ¿Su cena? ¿Tiene más… señora?

Sam: Soy Sam. Y sí tengo otra lata más, para desayunar… ¿Por qué? ¿Quiere una? Puede comprar latas de atún en el vagón restaurante. Es lo más barato que se puede comprar allí. Viajo con poco dinero y todo en este tren es muy caro.

Romero: Oh… Ya veo… Gracias, Sam.

Narrator: Aha! Now you know where the cans of tuna are coming from. Did you get it?

¡Exacto! “Del vagón restaurante”, from the dining car! Apparently, they’re the cheapest food you can get on the train. You and Romero move away from the other passengers to discuss what you’ve learned so far.

Romero: Bien, estamos progresando. Ahora sabemos más cosas. Primero, Toby, el perro, es el rival de Misifús en el concurso “La mejor mascota del mundo”. Además Claudia, la dueña de Toby, es muuuy alérgica a los gatos. Pero parece sospechoso, ¿no crees? También sabemos que Misifús está asegurado por mucho dinero: 21.200 dólares. Y… también, tenemos dos pistas que están relacionadas con el vagón restaurante: el recibo de vino que encontramos en el compartimento de Martina y ahora sabemos que en el vagón restaurante venden latas de atún.

Narrator: Ok, so let’s go over your “pistas” again. As you already know, Toby and Misifús “son rivales”, but there’s more. Martina del Río “es rica” and “Misifús está asegurado por 21.200 dólares.” Do you remember what that means? 

The cat is insured for 21,200 dollars. ¡Mucho dinero! And there’s a new “pista” as well, “la lata de atún”. And where do they sell them? In “el vagón restaurante”, in the dining car. Do you remember the other clue that leads you there too? 

That’s right, “el recibo de vino tinto”!

Romero: Bien. Tenemos que tomar una decisión. Podemos volver a hablar con la señora del Río o podemos ir al vagón restaurante para investigar las otras dos pistas… ¿Qué piensas? ¿Qué hacemos?
