Sebastián: ¡Hola de nuevo! Welcome to another episode of Un día en español, a Babbel podcast for Spanish learners.

Hoy vamos a escuchar a Minette. She’s moving to Colombia soon, but she’s from Mexicali, a city in the north of Mexico known as “The City that Captured the Sun”! She’ll tell us about long-distance relationships, how hard it can be to make them work during a global pandemic, and how we all do crazy things for love sometimes!
Ready? Then take it away, Minette!

Minette: ¡Hola! Mi nombre es Minette y soy de Mexicali, una ciudad en el norte de México conocida como “la ciudad que capturó el sol”, pero voy a mudarme a Rionegro, una pequeña ciudad de Colombia.

Sebastian: Minette tells us that she’s going to move, voy a mudarme, to a small city in Colombia, Rionegro. Did you hear how she uses the verb “ir” followed by another verb? It’s really similar to how we talk about what we’re going to do in the future in English. Pay attention and you’ll hear loads of examples of this construction throughout the episode. But anyway, why does she want to move tan lejos, so far?

Minette: ¿Por qué quiero mudarme tan lejos? La respuesta es sencilla: por amor. Todos hacemos locuras por amor y yo no soy la excepción.

Sebastian: Ah, did you get that? The answer to the question is simple: por amor, for love. We all do crazy things for love, todos hacemos locuras por amor, and Minette is no exception! Yesenia, Minette’s novia, girlfriend comes from Colombia. They visit each other whenever they can, but after two years in una relación a distancia, a long-distance relationship, they’re going to live together, juntas, in Colombia.

Minette: Mi novia se llama Yesenia y es de Colombia. Nos visitamos siempre que podemos, pero después de dos años en una relación a distancia vamos a vivir juntas en Colombia.

Sebastian: You can probably imagine, but the two are feeling really ilusionadas, excited about this big step in their relationship. They speak a lot about their future apartment: how they’re gonna decorate it and about the mascota, the pet that they’re going to have. They’re making a lot of plans for their future!

Minette: ¡Estamos muy ilusionadas! Por eso hablamos mucho de nuestro futuro apartamento, de cómo vamos a decorarlo, de la mascota que vamos a tener… estamos haciendo muchos planes de futuro.

Sebastian: So, Minette is off to Colombia today, but this time she doesn’t have un boleto de vuelta, a return ticket.

Minette: Voy a viajar a Colombia, pero esta vez sin boleto de vuelta. Y bueno, hoy voy a hacer el segundo intento… En el primer intento, no fui a Colombia porque Colombia cerró sus fronteras por la pandemia del Covid-19. Ahora, siete meses más tarde, ya es posible viajar.

Sebastian: But wait, today’s going to be her segundo intento, her second attempt? That’s right! The first time she tried, she says, no fui a Colombia, I didn’t go to Colombia. Colombia closed its fronteras, borders because of COVID, and now, seven months later, it’s possible to travel again.

So today’s the day! Minette’s finally going to get to see her girlfriend after more than half a year! Can you imagine waiting so long?! Everything is prepared, and she’s going to go to the airport with her sister.

Minette: Tengo ya todo preparado. Voy a ir con mi hermana al aeropuerto.

Sebastian: They arrive three hours before el vuelo, the flight, so she has plenty of time before take-off! She’s got all her documents ready to travel. When she gets to el mostrador, the counter, she hands over her passport, and pesan las maletas, they weigh her suitcases. Everything’s going according to plan… until…

Minette: Llegamos 3 horas antes del vuelo y tengo todos los documentos preparados para poder viajar. Llego al mostrador, entrego mi pasaporte y pesan las maletas. Todo va según lo planeado, hasta que…

Passenger check-in officer: –Muy bien. Por último, ¿tiene su prueba PCR?

Minette: –No, no la tengo. En la información del vuelo no dice que necesito una PCR.

Passenger check-in officer: –Sin la prueba PCR no es posible viajar. Lo siento.

Sebastian: Oh, no! She needs a PCR test! Sin la PCR no es posible viajar, the person at the counter tells her. Without it, it’s not possible to travel. So, what’s Minette gonna do? Luckily, her sister is there to help her, and tells her that there’s a lab nearby where they do the test. So, she goes running! Her flight hace escala, has a layover in Mexico City. Minette tells us that el resultado va a llegar antes de mi vuelo a Colombia, the result is going to arrive before my flight.

Minette: Mi hermana me dice que hay un laboratorio cerca. Voy corriendo y hago la PCR. El vuelo hace escala en Ciudad de México; el resultado va a llegar antes de mi vuelo a Colombia. Vuelvo corriendo al mostrador pero… el vuelo ya está cerrado.

Sebastian: What?! No! When she gets back from the lab el vuelo ya está cerrado, the flight is already closed. Minette. is. crushed.

Minette: Otra vez pierdo un vuelo, otra vez pierdo grandes cantidades de dinero…

Vuelvo a casa con mi hermana mientras lloro de rabia en el carro.

Sebastian: Poor Minette… she says that once again pierdo un vuelo, I miss a flight, and pierdo grandes cantidades de dinero, I lose a large amount of money. She’s so frustrated that on the way back she’s llorando de rabia, crying in anger. Later that evening, she talks on the phone with Yesenia. Are they going to rendirse, give up? Are they going to olvidar, forget, this dream of living together?

Minette: Por la noche Yesenia y yo hablamos por teléfono. ¿Vamos a rendirnos? ¿Vamos a olvidar este sueño de vivir juntas?

Sebastian: And I don’t blame them. It must be really awful to feel like the universe is trying to keep you away from your partner. But, they talk for hours until they finally decide: vamos a comprar otro vuelo, we are going to buy another flight. That’s great news! The new flight is in three weeks: on the 17th of November.

Minette: Hablamos durante horas sobre qué podemos hacer y… decidimos que vamos a comprar otro vuelo. La nueva fecha va a ser el 17 de noviembre: en tres semanas.

Sebastian: But those three weeks pasan muy lentas, pass very slowly. She repeats all the pre-flight preparations… but this time she gets her PCR test with enough time to spare.

Minette: Y las tres semanas hasta el día de mi viaje pasan muy lentas. Una vez más repito los preparativos antes del vuelo, ¡pero esta vez me hago una PCR con suficiente tiempo!

Sebastian: And por fin, finally, the day of the flight arrives. Unsurprisingly, Minette is really nervous. Everything has to go well this time.

Minette: Por fin Llega el día del vuelo. Estoy muy nerviosa. Todo tiene que salir bien.

Sebastian: Minette repeats the pre-flight process again, but this time she hopes she’s well prepared. She goes to the counter, hands over all her documents, they weigh her equipaje, luggage, and…

Minette: Cuando llegamos al aeropuerto el proceso se repite de nuevo, pero esta vez espero estar preparada: voy al mostrador y entrego todos los documentos, pesan mi equipaje y…

Passenger check-in officer: –Lo siento, pero su maleta tiene sobrepeso.

Minette: –Espere, seguro hay algo que puedo dejar en México.

Sebastian: Oops, su maleta tiene sobrepeso, says the person at the counter, your suitcase is overweight… That’s it? Minette laughs. She’s sure there’s something that she can dejar en Mexico, leave in Mexico.

Minette: Y así es. Saco unos pantalones de la maleta y ya está todo listo para poder embarcar.

Sebastian: She leaves a pair of pantalones, and everything is ready for her to embarcar, to board! In the cabin, she can’t help but llorar de alegría y de tristeza, cry from happiness and from sadness. She’s going to see her girlfriend soon, but she’s also leaving her country. The plane despega, takes off, and Minnete can’t wait to finally see Yesenia.

Minette: En la cabina no puedo evitar llorar de alegría por ver a mi novia y de tristeza por dejar mi país. El avión despega y no puedo esperar a ver a Yesenia.

Minette: Cuando el avión aterriza, Yesenia me espera fuera del aeropuerto. Por el Covid, no es posible esperar dentro de los aeropuertos.

Sebastian: When the plane aterriza, lands, Yesenia is waiting outside the airport. Por el Covid, because of Covid, it’s not possible to wait inside. Minette is still feeling really nervous. What’s it going to be like to see each other again after such a long time?

Minnete: Estoy muy nerviosa. Salgo del aeropuerto y veo a Yesenia entre las personas que esperan a sus seres queridos. Y al verla, por fin, me siento en paz; nunca me había sentido más en paz.

Sebastian: When Minnete leaves the airport, Yesenia is among the people waiting for sus seres queridos, their loved ones. And when Minette finally sees her… she feels… at peace, en paz. Never in her whole life has she felt more at peace.

Love really does make people do crazy things sometimes… but thankfully it all paid off in the end. So here’s to Minette and Yesenia and to turning plans into reality.
